Lending a helping of hair
If you shop in Chestnut Hill at all, you probably know the Chestnut Hill Cheese Shop’s Adam Serfass by name. If not, it’s likely that the friendliest guy on the Avenue knows yours. Last week, Serfass had 12 inches of hair trimmed from his long braid in order to donate it to Locks of Love, a non-profit organization that collects hair to make wigs for children who lose their hair because of cancer treatment. Kathleen Wallace of Sherlocks on West Highland Avenue removed the lock with a few quick cuts. Serfass first learned of Locks of Love a few years ago. “My best friend had a young niece who had cancer,” he said. “She had a wig made for her two months before she passed away.”
Then, the daughters of the Cheese Shop’s owners John Ingersoll and Dan Weiss, Allie Ingorsoll and Jacqline Weiss, donated hair to the organization. So Serfass decided to do the same. This last cut was his third. He says it takes him two years to grow the 10 to 12 inches Locks of Love looks requires for a donation.
