GFS field hockey earns in semi-finals The Germantown Friends varsity field hockey team defeated rival Friends Select 2-0 in the last regular season game, earning the chance to host the Friends Schools League semi-finals round against George School. The Friends Select team came to the Tigers’ playing fields with some impressive victories to their credit. From the first whistle, the Tigers were on the attack and determined to win the game. With patience and tremendous jabs and tackles, the GFS midfielders and defenders repeatedly double teamed the ball and regained possession. Junior Katie Low and senior Ally Ewing combined for some excellent right side passing resulting in numerous shooting opportunities. The Tigers’ first goal came during the first half of play off a penalty corner. Junior Chelsea Guy-Frank inserted the ball to the top of the circle where senior co-captain Becky Childs took a huge shot. It bounced off a defender’s foot before finding the back of the net. At the very next whistle, the Tigers stole the ball and took it down the field for a shot. This type of aggressive determination was the difference in the game. During the second half, seniors Jess Gray and Carolyn Tilney combined with Guy-Frank for some strong passing up the left demonstrating the Tigers’ flexibility in being able to attack from all angles. A second goal resulted from the fine play of senior Ally Ewing as she brought the ball into the circle and took a shot which Guy-Frank was able to finish. Equally important was the powerful play of the Tigers’ defense. Junior Becca Williams was instrumental in blocking up Friends Select’s huge free hits and came up with ball after ball on her stick. Sophomore Sarah Bell played strong right side defense along with junior Sarah Schulman. Sweeper Moira Quigley demonstrated her composure under pressure as she stepped to and shut-down numerous opportunities for Select. Sophomore keeper, Annie Tickell, made six saves on the day and was an impressive force. |
