CHC tennis places seventh

Chestnut Hill College finished seventh out of eight participating teams at the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) Championships on the campus of SUNY Purchase last Friday afternoon. The Griffins totaled 25 points and competed in each singles and doubles flight, finding their most success at number three doubles with a finals appearance.

Third flight doubles team, sixth ranked, sophomore Karen Guwuriro and freshman Brittany Parker, opened with a 9-8 upset of the number three duo from Penn State – Berks, before advancing all the way to the third doubles flight championship. Guwuriro and Parker won their semifinals match 8-5 over freshman Chantal Louras and sophomore Cassandra Hartwell of Philadelphia Biblical University (PBU), only to fall 8-2 to sophomore Chelsea Herman and Alanna Costelloe-Kuehn in the championship round. At number one doubles, junior Colleen Reasoner and sophomore Rachel Steinberg fell in the opening round to the top ranked duo from PSU – Berks, sophomores Samantha Burkey and Sarah Campbell, 8-0. Junior Lisa Graeber and sophomore Landra Ginder also lost their opener, at number two doubles, to freshmen Karen Wolff and Holly Woodcock of PSU – Berks by a final of 8-2.

The Griffins made semifinals appearances at both number five and number six singles. Ginder and Parker each advanced to the semifinal round to record the top individual performances for Chestnut Hill College at the NEAC Championships. The third seeded Ginder fell 6-4, 8-6, at number five singles as Parker battled in a tough loss at number six singles 6-2, 6-4 (7-5). The Griffins took first round exits at each of the first four singles flights. At number one singles Steinberg fell 6-2, 6-1, while Reasoner lost number two singles 6-1, 6-4. Guwuriro lost in straight sets 6-3, 6-3 to Louras at number three singles, as Graeber dropped number four singles 6-1, 6-0 to Woodcock.
