GFS boys soccer dominates calvary
Germantown Friends School hosted Calvary Christian this past Saturday looking to improve upon their 8-5-1 record and did so in a blowout fashion. With no offense to be found on the field for Calvary and a worn out defense the 8-0 score seemed to be quite fitting for Germantown as they walked away with their biggest win of the season and a more comfortable second place position in the Friends School League. The game started and stayed for the most part on Calvary’s side of the field thanks to Germantown’s defense led by captain Henry Robb and Joshua West. What would turn out to be a nonstop 80 minute attack on Calvary’s goalie started out with a shot from just about midfield by Ben Gemberling-Johnson that was carried by the wind and right through the goalie’s hands for the first score of the game. Germantown came right back on the attack, almost as if they had something to prove trying to get their third win in a row after losing three straight to league teams. The second goal of the game followed soon after the first and was scored by captain Teo Zuares, assisted by the already very involved Gemberling-Johnson. There were a couple more nice shots by Tucker Wood, Matt Hedley and Gemberling-Johnson but the first half would end with only one more score, a breakaway by Zuares giving him his second goal of the game and his team a 3-0 lead going into the half. The second half of the game picked up right where it had left off with a goal scored by Matt Berson follwed by another goal by Germantown’s lead goal scorer Manolo Sanchez off of a weak kick that seemed to catch the goalie off guard. Gemberling-Johnson continued to be a problem for the Calvary team after a shot was not picked up by the frustrated goalie, but instead was kicked right to Gemberling-Johnson who instinctively shot it right back in the net scoring his second goal of the game and putting on a show for the home crowd. Berson scored his second goal shortly after, adding to the already impressive score. With a frustrated Calvary team just wanting to go back home and forget this humiliating loss it was only a matter of time before they stared misplacing their anger. While inside the box, Caleb Mactavish was shoved before he could get his shot off, giving Germantown a penalty kick. Adding insult to injury, Robb took the kick for Mactavish and blasted it right by the Calvary goalie for yet another score to finally finish the game. Germantown will be taking part in the FSL league tournament Saturday, 10/28/06, to finish out their season. |
