prevails, Mount places third at AACA Champs
Unchallenged, as usual, a familiar, elfin figure approached the finish line approached the finish line last Wednesday at the Athletic Association of Catholic Academies Cross Country Championships. Mount St. Joseph Academy ninth-grader Tori Perri covered the 3.1-mile course at Bucks County’s Tyler State Park in 19 minutes and 2.4 seconds to win the league meet, adding an exclamation point to her undefeated dual-meet season in the AACA. Following the freshman across the line were three other runners in the 19-minute bracket: sophomore Colleen Gilmore (19:30) and senior Kathleen Davies (19:32) of St. Basil Academy, and junior Kelly McEldrew (19:50) of Gwynedd Mercy.

hockey captures third AACA title
Back in late September, Mount St. Joseph Academy received the number one ranking in a Southeastern PA field hockey poll, and in their very next outing the Magic were dealt their first loss of the season, a 4-2 setback at Villa Maria. Last Thursday evening, the Mount was given the number one seed for the District I Class AAA tournament, and the next day the local sticksters played for the Athletic Association of Catholic Academies championship against - you guessed it - Villa Maria.

gridiron boys beat Haverford
Chestnut Hill Academy won its first Inter-Ac football game in over 30 years, but for junior Mike Lonergan beating their hosts 14-12 wasn’t good enough. “We didn’t really come out like we wanted to. We didn’t play as hard as we wanted to, we didn’t execute. We still won, but it felt like we lost,” said the 6-foot-2, 185-pound junior who had two key defensive plays on both sides of the ball against Haverford School on Saturday, Oct. 21. Lonergan scored the deciding touchdown on a 21-yard reception in the first half. In the second half, he recovered a fumble to buy the Blue Devils (6-1 overall, 1-1 league) defense more time as they tried to prevent a Fords (1-8, 0-2) comeback. After several games this season, CHA players have talked about the need to execute better—an idea echoed by their head coach, Rick Knox.

Soccer puts en effort, but no win
Chestnut Hill Academy hosted Haverford School this past Friday afternoon and suffered another loss to their Inter-Ac League and fell to an 8-6-1 record. The winds were harsh and the players were physical but only three yellow cards were given and only one goal was scored. Despite the roaring sideline which was composed of the Chestnut Hill football team, who had to leave due to excessive noise, and the normal vocal crowd, the Devils were not able to produce any numbers walking away with only the thoughts of what could’ve been. The game started off evenly matched. Ryan Duffy and co-captain Ian DeSantis led the defense and Chip Culp made some amazing saves. Joe Breen almost had the first goal of the game after a fatal mistake by the Haverford goalie misreading the ball, but he was unable to capitalize, a seeming trend throughout the game. Mike Marino kept the pressure high on Haverford but couldn’t adjust to the wind, which made everyone of his kicks sore right over the goal post.

boys soccer dominates calvary
Germantown Friends School hosted Calvary Christian this past Saturday looking to improve upon their 8-5-1 record and did so in a blowout fashion. With no offense to be found on the field for Calvary and a worn out defense the 8-0 score seemed to be quite fitting for Germantown as they walked away with their biggest win of the season and a more comfortable second place position in the Friends School League. The game started and stayed for the most part on Calvary’s side of the field thanks to Germantown’s defense led by captain Henry Robb and Joshua West. What would turn out to be a nonstop 80 minute attack on Calvary’s goalie started out with a shot from just about midfield by Ben Gemberling-Johnson that was carried by the wind and right through the goalie’s hands for the first score of the game. Germantown came right back on the attack, almost as if they had something to prove trying to get their third win in a row after losing three straight to league teams.

men and women both pepper Patriots
Taking a break from North Eastern Athletic Conference competition last Saturday, Chestnut Hill College’s soccer teams boosted both their overall records and their individual statistics on an excursion to Valley Forge Christian College. The CHC women opened the afternoon doubleheader with a 5-1 win, and the men’s squad followed up with a 6-0 victory over the Patriots. The Griffin men saw their season record rise to 10-3-2 while their NEAC mark stayed at 6-2-2, and the women remained 6-4-1 in the conference and climbed to 9-6-2 overall. Following the double defeat, the Valley Forge women’s team was 4-12, and its male counterpart was 2-12.

hockey earns first league win A pair of second-half goals powered visiting Springside School to a 2-0 victory at Agnes Irwin last Thursday, as the Lions landed their first Girls Inter-Ac League win of the 2006 season.
Springside
soccer falls prey to Owls
In a number of Girls Inter-Ac League soccer outings this season, the Springside Lions have played hard late in the game, but were unable to overtake opponents who’d built up a comfortable lead earlier in the contest. This scenario played out again last Thursday afternoon, when the host Owls of Agnes Irwin School took a 3-0 advantage into the halftime break, and then cruised to a 3-1 victory. Irwin improved to 4-2 in the league and leveled its overall record at 6-6, while Springside dipped to 0-7 in the Inter-Ac and 3-10-1 overall.
