GFS field hockey wins three in a row The Germantown Friends School field hockey team swept two Friends Schools League rivals as well as a non-league contest in one week. The Academy of the New Church, George School and St. Hubert’s all succumbed to the mighty Tigers offense. At George School, the Tigers opened play with possession of the ball and never looked back, winning 2-0. They dominated the game and out smarted their opponent with short passes, quick shots and dominating defense. The mid-field consisting of junior Katie Low, co-captains Becky Childs and Carolyn Tilney helped the Tigers maintain possession, cutting off George’s thru passes and delivering the ball to the forward line. The forwards did their job as well creating 13 shots and 10 penalty corner opportunities. Chelsea-Guy Frank netted both goals for the Tigers. The defense, led by sophomore goalie Annie Tickell (3 saves) dominated the George School attack. Juniors Becca Williams, Moira Quigley, Sarah Schulman and Anna Bak played strong determined hockey and frustrated George’s attack all afternoon. When the Academy of the New Church visited GFS, they found that the Tigers had elevated their level of play to a new plane with accurate short passes, aggressive tackles and focused tenacity. On the 8th penalty corner of the game Ally Ewing took a shot from the top of the circle. The goalie stopped the initial shot but junior defender Becca Williams was there to put the rebound in. A few minutes later in the game, Becca took a shot and senior forward Jess Gray grabbed the rebound and found the back of the net. Junior sweeper Moira Quigley was a defensive wall and ANC was frustrated to find a way around her, leaving the final score 2-0. Sometimes in sports a team is able to put all the pieces together and play an almost perfect game. On Saturday, the Tigers field hockey team showed they are a force to be reckoned with and played an outstanding match against Catholic school rival St. Hubert on the turf at LaSalle University. Demonstrating their speed and fitness, the Tigers passed around their opponent and showed incredible skill, dexterity and determination in their 8-0 victory. The scoring was well spread out amongst many attackers. Highlights of the game include an incredible reverse stick lift from Becky Childs at the top of the circle that wowed both the crowd and the coaches. Senior Ally Ewing had a breakthrough performance as she demonstrated her ability to not only carry the ball on the right wing but deliver accurate, hard passes to her teammates resulting in 3 assists and a goal for her. Senior Jess Gray collected four goals and junior Chelsea Guy-Frank netted two. The mid-field were a dominant presence all afternoon. The defense shut down any attempts St. Hubert’s made to get in the defensive circle and sophomore goalie Annie Tickell got her 5th shut out of the year. Strong defensive performances include junior Sarah Schulman, Becca Williams and freshman Zoe Groomes-Klotz. |
