Students wore blue T-shirts proclaiming “We’re Back.” Members from the 1972 team watched with them in the crowd, which was almost as large for the school’s homecoming game. Television camera men along with scribes from the Philadelphia Inquirer and Daily News reported on the sidelines. After 34 years, Chestnut Hill Academy’s football team had returned to the Inter-Ac league.

With less than three minutes to go in last Monday’s home soccer match, the Chestnut Hill College women were about to claim an important victory over the team ranked just behind them in the North Eastern Athletic Conference.

As time was about to run out on the seventh-ranked Bard College Raptors, the visitors tied the game at 1-1 on a long outside shot, and then struck again 16 minutes into overtime to secure a 2-1 victory. Number six CHC saw its record slip to 5-3-1 in the NEAC and 7-4-2 overall, while Bard improved to 5-3, 7-3-1.

The men’s soccer team at Chestnut Hill College served up a Columbus Day special for home fans, turning a 1-0 halftime lead into a 3-0 victory in a North Eastern Athletic Conference game against the Bard College Raptors.

The host Griffins, who came into the match ranked third in the NEAC, improved to 5-1-2 in conference play and 8-2-2 overall. The sixth-ranked Raptors (4-4, 7-5) clearly demonstrated that they were no pushovers, which made Chestnut Hill’s mastery of the scoreboard seem all the more impressive.

The successful outcome gave the Griffins a seven-game unbeaten streak consisting of five wins and two ties. It was a good day for the freshman class, as rookies accounted for all three goals against Bard.

Last Saturday evening, Germantown Friends School’s soccer double-header under the lights at LaSalle University generated a lot of excitement, but unfortunately for GFS fans, no “W’s” for the host Tigers.

Coping with the sprightly behavior of the ball on LaSalle’s artificial turf surface, the GFS girls battled to a 0-0 draw with visiting Springside School, giving the Tigers a 5-3-1 record overall while they remained 3-2 within the Friends School League.

In the boys’ match, an official FSL contest, Friends Central enjoyed a two-goal lead over the home side at halftime, and even a dramatic late goal by the Tigers (4-2 and 6-5-3 overall) left them one point short as they fell to the Phoenix, 3-2. FC stayed unbeaten in the league, at 5-0, setting up this week’s showdown with Shipley, also undefeated in the FSL

CHA soccer picks up 7th win against Lawrenceville
by Devon Grieb

Chestnut Hill Academy soccer (7-3-1) hosted Lawrenceville School (4-4-1) last Wednesday afternoon and got their seventh win of the season with a score of 5-0. Playing through cold and rainy conditions, Chestnut Hill still managed to put on quite a show, that is for the few spectators who were huddled under the trees to see it.

Joe Breen started the attack for the Devils but was denied by what seemed to be a very talented Lawrenceville goalkeeper. Despite talent, no one person can win a soccer game, and when Lawrenceville’s defense broke down, the scoring frenzy began for the Devils.

Co-captain Brent Campman scored the first goal of the game. Towards the end of the first half, Campman scored again after the Lawrenceville goalkeeper had committed himself to coming out of the net to stop the play, misreading the ball and Campman’s kick.

The second half of the game Lawrenceville tried to jumpstart their depleted offense but to no avail. Junior Penn Steel and co-captain Ian DeSantis kept Devil goalkeeper, Chip Culp safe for most of the game and Lawrenceville’s offense non-existent.

Mount volleyball bows to Villa Maria
by TOM UTESCHER

In a 2006 volleyball campaign that finds both Mount St. Joseph Academy and Villa Maria chasing undefeated Merion Mercy in the Athletic Association of Catholic Academies, it was Villa which drew closer to the leaders last Thursday night with a 3-1 victory at Mount St. Joe’s.

GFS field hockey wins three in a row

The Germantown Friends School field hockey team swept two Friends Schools League rivals as well as a non-league contest in one week. The Academy of the New Church, George School and St. Hubert’s all succumbed to the mighty Tigers offense.

GFS boys x-country runs best among PA schools

The Germantown Friends School Boys cross-country team placed a remarkable 13th overall (best among PA schools) out of some 280 high school teams mostly from the northeast, but some from as far away as Colorado and California, in the prestigious Manhattan Cross Country Invitational at Van Cortlandt Park in New York City. The Tigers placed 4th in their race (probably the toughest of the 7 varsity boys races on the day), but the three teams that beat them ended up 1st, 2nd, and 11th overall.
