Obituaries

Rosa Novella Cartelli

Rosa Novella Cartelli (Corazza), of Chestnut Hill, died on Oct. 3. Mrs. Cartelli was predeceased by her husband, Pietro Cartelli. She is survived by her daughters Louise Viglianese (Dominic), Rita M. and Alessandra J. Cartelli; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

A funeral Mass was held at Holy Cross Church, in Mt. Airy on Oct. 7. Interment took place at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.

Jane Wehner Zurn Rech

Jane W. Rech, age 78, died October 6 at St. Mary’s Hospital in Langhorne after a short illness. She was preceeded in death by her first husband, John H. Zurn, who died in 1959, and her second husband, Philip C. Rech, who died in 1985. She was recently preceded in death by the youngest of her nine children, Robert C. Rech of Darien, Conn., who died in June of this year.

Mrs. Rech was the daughter of the late Jane Griffith Wehner and Harrison G. Wehner. She grew up in Chestnut Hill with her sister, Marianne Mebane of Wyndmoor, and her brother, Harrison G. Wehner, Jr., of Machipongo, Va., both of whom survive her.

In the years of her first marriage, Mrs. Rech lived in Erie and Jenkintown. After the death of her young husband and her subsequent marriage to Mr. Rech, she moved and lived for many years in Huntingdon Valley and later in Lower Gwynedd. For the last several years of her life she lived in the Langhorne area, near her daughter Nancy Bernardini, who cared for her.

The accomplishment of which Mrs. Rech was most proud was the large and strong family that she and her much beloved husbands created. A widow with five young children, Mrs. Rech married Philip C. Rech in 1961 when he was a widower with two young children. When two more children were born to them, Mrs. Rech found herself in the early 60s with nine children from 1 to 15 years old.

Mrs. Rech was a fervent supporter of education and every activity and sport in which her children and now grandchildren were involved. She loved sport, politics, golden retrievers, art, music and all things Welsh. She was an accomplished artisan whose needlepoint pieces hang in the houses of her friends and family.

She is survived by her children, Marianne Zurn and her husband Daniel Duffy of Northampton, Mass.; Linda Susan Collins and her husband, John Collins of Wilmington, N.C.; Philip D. Rech of Gibson, N.C.; R. Elizabeth Rech of Hingham, Mass.; Wendy Allen and her husband Mark Allen of St. Charles, Ill.; John H, Zurn of Brookville, Md.; Nancy Berbardini and her husband Stephen Berbardini of Langhorne, Pa.; Jane Toll and her husband Christopher Toll of Denver, Colo.; and her daughter-in-law, Ola Rech of Darien, Conn.

Mrs. Rech is also survived by her grandchildren Christopher Allen, Scott Allen, Lauren Collins, John Matthew Collins, Katherine Duffy, Julia Duffy, Martha Dogan, Michael Bernardini, Lisa Bernardini, John Henry Zurn 2d, Alexander Zurn, Caroline Toll, Ellen Toll, Harrison Toll, Philip C. Rech 2d, and Henry Rech.

Mrs. Rech’s life was celebrated Monday, October 9, at the Abington Friends Meetinghouse in Jenkintown, Pa.

Marguerite Malfatto

Marguerite Malfatto (nee Malfatto), 95, of Germantown, died on October 2.

Mrs. Malfatto was predeceased by her husband, Andrew; brothers Joseph and Louie; sister Josephine; and niece Judy Bryne (Bill). She is survived by her son Andrew (Ethel); nephews, great-nephews, nieces, cousins and godchildren.

A funeral Mass was held on October 9 at Sacred Heart Manor, 6445 Germantown Ave., Philadelphia, PA 19119, and interment was at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.

Francis Sharpe

Francis J. “Sonny” Sharpe, 71, of North Cape May, died on September 26. “Sonny” was a longtime employee at The Depot Restaurant in Chestnut Hill from the mid-’70s, until it closed. The Depot was located where Taste of Philly and Starbucks are today.

Mr. Sharpe was predeceased by his father, James C. Sharpe. He is survived by his mother, Marguerite T. Sharpe; his wife, Melanie (Flis); stepchildren John (Faune), Kevin (Stacie) and Chris (Kathy) McGeehan, Melanie (Eric) Edenholm and Mary (Kelly) Lawler; sisters, Margaret Mary Buckley (William), Patricia Devlin (John Patrick), Dolores Dittrich (John); and brothers, Thomas Sharpe (Bridget) and S. James Columb, I.H.M.

He is also survived by several grandchildren, a great-grandchild; several nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held on September 30 at St. John of God Church, 80 Townbank Road, North Cape May, NJ 08204, and interment took place at Cape May County Veterans Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the above-named church or to a charity of the donor’s choice.

Helen D. Randall

Helen D. Randall, passed away on Oct. 14. Born in Wilkes-Barre, Penn., on Sept. 24, 1924, she resided in Chester Springs with her daughter and son-in-law. Mrs. Randall began her long professional career in New York at Eastern Airlines, then worked at The New Yorker Magazine. She stopped working to raise a family of three children, and in her mid-forties began a new career in Early Childhood education, which would remain her passion for the rest of her life. Also in her mid-forties she completed her degree in Early Childhood Education at Harcum College with Honors.

Besides founding the Childcare Center at the Christ Lutheran Church in Chestnut Hill, she also taught at the Elm Nursery in Chestnut Hill, the Miquon School, and the Jenkintown Day Nursery. When many her age had retired, she began a new job at the Phoenixville Adult Activities Center. Even at age eighty-one, she was not retired, and worked most recently for the Head Start Program in Phoenixville. She had the natural ability to make friends and inspire affection wherever she went, and a special talent for engaging and teaching very young children.

Mrs. Randall was a willing and active volunteer in any community where she lived. She volunteered in the Pediatric section of Chestnut Hill Hospital, for the Red Cross, at the Briar Bush Nature Center in Jenkintown, the Maxwell Mansion in Germantown, and most recently at the Chester Springs Library and Historic Yellow Springs in Chester Springs. For many years she was an active member of The Stagecrafters Theater in Chestnut Hill.

Mrs. Randall is survived by her daughter Margaret (Meg) Randall and her husband Charles McManus of Chester Springs; a son David (Tad) Randall and his wife Hilary Rayvis-Randall of San Mateo, Calif.; a granddaughter Alexandra Randall of San Mateo, and a step-grandson, Sean McManus and his wife Joanna of Cerritos, Calif.; her sister Edythe D. Tessen of Memphis, Tenn.; and by her former husband David V. Randall of Wyndmoor. She was predeceased by her son Kirk S. Randall. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

There will be a memorial service on Saturday, October 12 at 1:30 PM at the Campbell-Ennis-Klotzbach Funeral Home, Inc., Main Street at Fifth Avenue, Phoenixville, PA 19460. Those wishing to remember Mrs. Randall are asked to consider a contribution to the Friends of the Chester Springs Library, 1685-A Art School Road, Chester Springs, PA 19425. Contributions will be directed to the purchase of children’s books.

Catherine Shinn

Catherine M. Shinn (Cleary), of Mt. Airy, died on October 13.

Mrs. Shinn was predeceased by her husband, Frank W. Shinn and her son, Raymond.

She is survived by a son, Albert (Ramona); a daughter, Cheryl Clayton; two brothers, Raymond and Richard Cleary; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

A funeral Mass was held at Holy Cross Church on October 17. Interment was private.

Max Klein

Max Klein 82, of Wyndmoor and Delray Beach, Florida died peacefully surrounded by his family on October 5.

Mr. Klein is survived by his wife of 60 years, Lucille (Young) Klein; his daughters Susan Gerber (Alan) of New York, and Rosalind Doman (Douglas) of Wyndmoor; his son Ira Klein (Cindy) of Colo. He is also survived by eight grandchildren, and 3 great-grandchildren.

Memorial services were held on October 6 at Beth Israel Memorial Gardens, Woodbridge, N.J.
