Local NewsEssay: Learning from Cape Town
When most kids think of summer, they think of hanging out with friends, sunbathing at the shore and completely avoiding anything remotely academic. But last spring, when I began to search for a memorable way to spend my last high school summer, I wanted to go in a different direction. I have always been an ambitious student. I have challenged myself with difficult courses and have sacrificed free time for studying, but when I entered high school, it seemed to me that it was important to conquer more than algebra and biology.
City Council considers code overhaul Zoning reform could be on the horizon for Philadelphia if legislation introduced by City Councilmen Frank DiCicco (D, 1) and Jim Kenney (D, at-large) makes its way through City Council.
Hill lot to reopen after 8 months
Chestnut Hill’s Parking Lot 4, situated behind the east side of Germantown Avenue’s 8400 block, which has been closed since February, is expected to reopen next week. The lot’s closure has contributed to a decrease in business for some the businesses bordering the lot, and owners and employees say they are anxious for it to reopen. “It has definitely hurt business,” said Ginny Ashenfelter of the Happy Butterfly in the Chestnut Hill Community Centre, 8419 Germantown Ave.
Run for Hill of it still running
with Dinner Dance
The finish line has been crossed and generous donations collected, but the Friends of Erik still isn’t finished raising funds for the Dahmm family. On Oct. 28, the group will hold its 19th annual Run for the Hill of It Dinner Dance and Auction — an event that is a follow up to its 5K Run for the Hill and 1K walk in the summer. Already, about $50,000 has been raised for the Dahmm family through the run and individual donations, according to Shannon Leber, event coordinator for the dinner dance. She said she expects that the dinner dance and auction will add at least $10,000 more.

CHA alum shows his photography
at school’s gallery
Michael Koehler may have been a strong football player as a Chestnut Hill Academy student, but it wasn’t the big homecoming game that brought him back to his alma mater this year. Instead, Koehler returned to display his work in an exhibit in the Crawford Gallery, hoping to inspire young photographers as he was just a few years ago. Koehler, 24, spent his CHA years playing football and experimenting with photography in the streets of Philadelphia. When he was a boy, he said he “played with photography,” capturing the images of his friends at play or hanging out. Although he enjoyed the hobby, it remained just that until his CHA photography teacher, Peter Capano, showed Koehler a body of work he had done as a younger man. “They were photos of his friends and neighbors, just hanging out,” Koehler said, photos that were similar to his own experimentations. “His work inspired me to be proud of my own art.”

backdrop of Bowman brouhaha The executive committee of the Chestnut Hill Community Association held it’s October meeting last Thursday with most of the neighborhood and many of its members still buzzing from the recent move by Bowman Properties to erect dozens of red and white real estate signs soliciting cash checking establishments and discount retailers. |
