GFS girls soccer earns 4th shutout The Germantown Friends girls varsity soccer team played Academy of the New Church last week and came away with their fourth consecutive shutout, 1-0. The Tigers artfully brought the ball time and time again up the wing on the feet of Allie Beer and Nina Carpenter, both of Chestnut Hill, and sophomore Emma Crimm of Mt. Airy. In the first 40 minutes the Tigers seemed to be dominating, but the ANC forwards had a few nail-biting shots that went just wide. GFS came on strong in the second half, again pressuring the ANC goalkeeper but not being able to connect. Nina Voith, the GFS center back, even got into the attack and was able to send multiple blistering shots that passed just wide of the posts. It wasn’t until the 57th minute that a cross off the foot of sophomore Lydia Kring of Chestnut Hill was netted by Allie Beer to give GFS the lone goal of the game. The GFS defense had a solid game all around with senior Julia Bergman of Mt. Airy leading the helm. The final tally showed shots on goal at 19-5 in GFS’s favor and corner kicks 16-4 in favor of the Tigers, who are now 2-0 in Friends Schools League competition. |
