GFS boys cross country stars at Lehigh

The Germantown Friends School Boys Cross Country team placed second overall in the biggest meet of the season: the Paul Short Invitational Cross Country Meet at Lehigh University. With 47 high schools competing, the Tigers came in just five points behind Quince Orchard High School from Maryland, which entered the meet ranked 10th in the Southeast Region of the US. Germantown Friends became the top Pennsylvania team, decisively beating four public high schools in the state that were ranked in the top ten: Strath Haven High School (3rd place- previously ranked 10th in PA), Central

Bucks South (4th place- previously ranked 7th in PA), Haverford High School (5th place- previously ranked 5th in PA), and ahead of West Chester East High School (6th place- previously ranked 3rd in PA). GFS coach Rob Hewitt said, “I’m proud of all my team members who competed. There is no doubt that we will be breaking into the top rankings in the state following this performance.”

Junior phenomenon Max Kaulbach crossed the finish line in a tie for second place, but was technically 3rd with an outstanding time of 15:46, just 3 seconds behind the winner of the race. Fellow

juniors Jake McKenzie (11th, 16:07) and Isaac Ortiz (22nd, 16:17) were among the Tigers who helped to dominate the field of 326 high school runners. GFS earned a well-deserved trophy and state-wide recognition as they climb steadily in the rankings.
