Creative Fusion Craft Studio adds beauty
to the world. Under the guidance of camp director and Springside
English teacher Gretel DeRuiter, girls enrolled in Creative Fusion
Craft Studio at Springside School this summer used fabric, tile,
paint, paper, wood, dyes, wax, beads, and objects found in nature
to make an array of beautiful crafts. Each week of the three-week
summer camp focused on a different set of projects, and every introduction
of new supplies and endeavors was met with exclamations like “Cool!”
and “Ooh, awesome!” from the girls. Crazy-quilt pillows,
jewelry, block prints, painted wooden objects, mosaics, collages,
hand-made books of poetry, batik, and tie-dye designs were among
the projects they took home. Some girls even left whimsically creative
fairy houses behind in the Wissahickon woods. Pictured is Barclay
Wohlstetter of Chestnut Hill displaying jewelry she made. |
“SIR ALEISTER”:
The Local’s Robyn John stands with her AbZOOlutely

of hard work paid off with passers-by admiring John’s homage
to Alice in Wonderland. For more photos, visit www.chlocalphotos.com.

A state historical marker
in honor of Philo Farnsworth, inventor of the electronic
television, and the experiments he did in Wyndmoor in the 1930s,
was unveiled in a ceremony on Sept. 15 outside of 1260 E. Mermaid
Lane, near the location of Farnsworth’s station. The marker
was unveiled by Larry Curry, state representative and commissioner
of the State Historical and Museum Commission (standing on ladder)
and Janet Klein, a commissioner of the Pennsylvania Historical and
Museum Commission (plaid suit). Looking on are Baird Standish, chairman
of the Springfield Township Board of Commissioners, Jeff Harbison,
a township commissioner, and Ed Zwicker, Springfield Township Historical
Society president. Plans for the marker were arranged by the PHMC
and the historical society.
