A FISHY COMPETITION:
Lydia Williams, of Chestnut Hill, entered her Siamese fighting fish,
Ennesto Zapata, in the Pet Parade and Competition at the Mt. Airy
Village Fair last Sunday. The competition started at 2:30 p.m. Dozens
of entrants, many in costume, paraded before the judges and hundreds
of onlookers, and every entrant walked away (on all fours) with
a blue ribbon.

HE WOOD IF HE COULD:
Talented local woodworker James McCoy was one of the many craftspeople
at the Mt. Airy Village Fair, held by the intersection of Carpenter
Lane and Greene Street last Sunday, 11-5 p.m. Both sides of Carpenter
Lane on Greene Street were closed for the event. The intersection
has been gaining much attention recently, with its cluster of businesses
committed to sustainability, ecology and community: Weavers Way
Co-op, the Moving Arts Studio, Big Blue Marble Bookstore, Maternal
Wellness Center and High Point Café. The fair reflected this
intention and focused on engaging activities, presentations and
entertainment. (Photo by Jimmy J. Pack Jr.)

After several months of summer practice,
the 14-player squad from the Chestnut Hill Youth Sports Club made
a clean sweep of their opponents in their season-opening weekend.
On Saturday morning they traveled to Warrington to face the Phantoms,
where the Blue Lightning cruised to a 9-0 shutout. In all, six players
contributed to the goal tally. Outstanding performances were delivered
by defensive sweeper Billy Harris, with a hat trick, and midfielder
Felipe Sanz de Acedo with two goals. Other goals were scored by
Harrison Kapp, Wyatt Smith, Jimmy Carpenter, and Silas Shah. On
Sunday, their first home game, the Blue Lightning narrowly held
on to victory after scoring first against a very tough Solebury
Patriots’. The win was a real credit to the defense and especially
to goalkeeper Daniel Lewis’ six critical saves. The game was
nearly tied in the last five minutes when Jimmy Carpenter deflected
an almost-certain goal away from the goal mouth. Wyatt Smith added
two goals to the effort, bringing his overall tally to three scores
for the season. Next weekend the U9ers will play the Upper Makefield
Wave away on Saturday and will host the Buckingham Wolfpack at home
on Sunday. |
NO FEAR: Sean Gustafson
won the first ever Oraganic Pie Eating Contest held this past Sunday
at the Mt. Airy Village Fair. “It was really easy,”
said Gustafson, a former employee of the NBC show Fear Factor. On
which contestants eat cow eyes and other undigestable “goodies”
prepped him well for the event. (Photo by Jimmy J. Pack

EVER FALL OFF YOUR SEGWAY?
“People do. I haven’t. I’ve been riding it a month,
6 or 7 hours each day. When you want to go backwards you shift your
weight back. When you want to turn on the spot, you turn the handle.
About all it’s about is keeping your balance.” John
McAllister, Philadelphia University Patrol Officer.
