Local SportsNew leadership for Springside’s
fall teams
Springside soccer mentor Gary Stephenson took charge of the Lions booters just a year ago, but he’s already been at his post longer than the varsity head coaches for the school’s other three fall sports teams. Springside’s field hockey and tennis squads are both under new management, and there is now a cross country team, a new undertaking altogether for the Lions. A year ago, Susie Macciocca joined the Springside faculty as a math teacher, and she was an assistant coach for both the varsity hockey and lacrosse teams. Now she’s stepping up into the top spot in field hockey, a post held for two decades by Betty Ann Fish, who will continue to be the school’s Director of Physical Education.
Mount hockey works out with
Emmaus, Wissahickon
For the first scrimmage of the 2006 field hockey pre-season period, Mount St. Joseph Academy could hardly have devised a more rigorous challenge than the one the Magic faced at Wissahickon High School last Thursday morning. There, they took on not only the host Trojans, state semifinalists for the past three years, but also the Emmaus High School Green Hornets, the two-time defending state champions, and the team ranked number one in the nation in 2005.
CHA student hits mark in National Rifle Competition
Over the summer, CHA senior Matthew Fingerman had his sights on something other than schoolwork as he competed in the 2006 National Outdoor Rifle and Pistol Championships in Ohio, where, in his age group, he placed second nationally in the Metallic Sight Matches (no scopes) and sixth nationally in the Any Sights Matches. His performance won him fourth place overall in his division at the National Smallbore Rifle NRA Three-Position Championship. Impressed by his performance at the competition, the Pennsylvania State Team invited him to shoot as a member of their Sharpshooter Division, which took second place at the championship.
Mount volleyball building on
solid base
In 2005, the Mount St. Joseph Academy volleyball team won the Bicentennial League with a record of 9-1, and went 4-3 against Athletic Association of Catholic Academies rivals to finish as the runner-up in that league. The Magic went on to reach the quarterfinal round of the PIAA District 1 tournament, where a 1-3 loss to Bishop Shanahan closed out the campaign with an overall mark of 14-6. This year, according to longtime head coach Sandy Butcher, a full complement of Catholic Academies teams have signed up for league competition, so Mount St. Joe has bid farewell to the Bicentennial and will be affiliated only with the AACA for league matches. Setter Megan Skowronek and hitters Cara Mulholland (outside) and Kait Woznicki (middle) left the Mount team as part of the Class of 2006.
Mount St. Joseph Academy has finished fourth at the Bicentennial League
cross country championships in each of the last two seasons, but this
fall the Magic seemed poised to step up into one of the top positions
in the league. The Mounties were a young bunch in 2005, and every runner
who scored in last year’s championship meet is back in action this
year.
