to play in World University Games
As he prepares to head downtown next month for his senior year at the University of Pennsylvania, Chestnut Hill Academy graduate Gilly Lane has planned a little detour through Szeged, Hungary. Lane will be one of three American college players on the U.S. Squash Team that will represent this country at the 20-team World University Games tournament, which will take place August 28 through September 2. Although American players have entered this tourney in the past on an independent basis, the trio that includes Lane will be the first official U.S. team to participate in the event.
In the dog days of summer, when most high school athletes are enjoying a few weeks of downtime, one of the area’s top lacrosse players arrived at a major decision about her future, and then earned one of the highest honors in her chosen sport. Magarity took up the sport in a club setting when she was in junior high school. She has been playing basketball and soccer from a young age, and a starter for GA in both of the other sports, winning multiple Girls
The Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association’s starting date for fall sports practice was August 14, and last Monday Mount St. Joseph Academy’s field hockey squad jumped right into its pre-season routine of three-a-day workouts. A number of the established team members had played some summer league hockey together and had trained at a team camp hosted by Old Dominion University. At ODU, the various teams were assigned points according how they fared in practice games, and at the end of their stay the Magic had the highest total of any of the squads in attendance. |
