The Friends of the Wissahickon (FOW) and Fairmount Park District 3 staff have been making many improvements around Valley Green Inn as part of FOW’s Valley Green Environmental Restoration Project, including a wooden guard rail along the Chestnut Hill side parking lot and a wooden gate between the parking lot and Forbidden Drive. All the wood used is black locust from the Wissahickon Valley. Fairmount Park District 3 staff collected the trees and stored them in their yard. FOW hired a band saw mill to cut them into posts, rails, and pieces for the gate. Pictured (from left) are Buzz Wemple, Gerry White, Larry Moy, and Ed Stainton. (Photo by James Sherman)

A very small portion of kids get the disease but it’s terrible. They’ve been fighting it for years.” Bill Paull, Engine 37.
