APPRECIATING AND REINTERPRETING TRADITION: Al-Bustan Camp is an Arabic language and Cultural Day Camp. Campers and counselors from diverse ethnic and religious backgrounds came from a range of Philadelphia neighborhoods and suburbs to participate in this fifth summer program at a new location, Springside School in Chestnut Hill, from July 3 to 28. Prior to this year the camp was held at Morris Arboretum. This year’s theme was Egypt, as seen through the life story of Egyptian singer, Um Kulthum, who grew up in the Nile delta and defied gender barriers to gain her fame in Cairo and around the world. Seen here, a camper named Nadia is having fun painting a group mural evoking the colors of the Egyptian delta and desert landscapes.

Rachel Gerber of Fort Washington, is currently a Public Information intern at WHYY. Under the direction of Senior Publicist Anna Christopher, Gerber writes press releases, creates press previews, conducts research and interviews, and updates media contact information.
“The combination of my intern responsibilities really enhances my learning experience at WHYY,” Gerber said. “The fast-paced environment at WHYY makes the assignments interesting and challenging.”
Gerber is entering her junior year at Syracuse University where she studies public relations at the S.I. Newhouse School of Communication and political science at the Maxwell School.
“I’m immersed in an environment at WHYY where I am able to engage in a symbiotic relationship with the employees,” Gerber says. “The opportunity to write for WHYY enables me to contribute to the organization and learn a tremendous amount simultaneously.”
