Water main repairs Residents of West Evergreen Avenue, between Germantown Avenue and Navajo Street, and Navajo Street, between Evergreen and Highland avenues, are facing eight months of heavy construction on their street as the Philadelphia Water Department conducts a routine, but large-scale water main replacement. “The water mains … have outlived their useful lifespan and must be replaced now to safeguard your water and prevent potential leaks or breaks from flooding and damaging city streets and private property,” according to a letter to neighbors from Joseph Rudolph, a contract manager with the department. A private contractor, Carusone Construction, Inc., was hired for the project, which was scheduled to begin on Monday, July 24 and continue block-by-block until March 2007. Normal working hours will be between 7 a.m. and 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, and the street will be closed as needed. Neighbors will be warned about water shut-offs, which will typically start at 9 a.m. and last for two to eight hours, depending on the need. The Water Department has designated an inspector to be on the project site every day to consult with neighbors and the contractor if problems arise, and if there is an emergency, Rudolph directs neighbors to call him at 215-685-6357 during work hours, or the Water Department hot line at 215-685-6300 anytime.
