SportsCHA golf splits series with
Malvern Prep
In a home/away series involving two of the top three contenders for the Inter-Ac League golf championship, the Chestnut Hill Academy Blue Devils and the Friars of Malvern Prep successfully defended their home turf last week, splitting the matches between them. Playing host on April 18, Chestnut Hill pulled out a 238-241 win on the par-36 front nine at Sunnybrook, but two days later the same score did not translate to victory at Waynesborough Country Club in Paoli. Malvern has been performing well at its par-35 home venue, and last Thursday the Friars downed the Devils, 229-238. These were the first league contests of the 2006 season for Malvern, which finished third last year. CHA, which shared the Inter-Ac crown with Haverford in 2005, opened up this spring with a home loss to the Fords on April 10. The Blue Devils’ return match with Haverford won’t be played until May 5.
CHA Devils lacrosse overwhelms
JV from Episcopal, 12-2
Competing against varsity teams in non league matches and junior varsity squads within the Inter-Ac, Chestnut Hill Academy’s two-year-old lacrosse team is experiencing varying degrees of success. There have been very challenging bouts against JV clubs from Germantown Academy (a one-goal win for CHA) and Penn Charter (a loss). On the other hand, the Blue Devils won convincingly against Malvern, and last Friday Chestnut Hill rolled to a 12-2 victory over the visiting Episcopal Academy JVs. Bruno Petrillo notched a hat trick and one assist, and the Devils got two goals apiece from Tyler Stout (two assists), Greg Quillian and Jon Salem in their recent win over the Churchmen. The successful outcome lifted the locals’ record to 8-3-1 on the season. Starting goalie Brett Shandler (six saves) had a shutout going for 35 minutes before Cody Isdaner scored the first of his two goals for Episcopal (4-3). Isdaner’s second marker came against CHA reserve keeper John L. Harris, who made one save in the final minutes of the game.
GFS baseball shines in rout
of Friends Select The Tigers of Germantown Friends School added another win to their 5-1 record Friday afternoon with an impressive, 12-0 rout of the Friends Select Falcons.
GA track edges out shortstaffed
CHA
Visiting Germantown Academy was one man short for last week’s track and field dual meet at Chestnut Hill Academy, but the host Blue Devils had greater manpower problems and lost a close encounter with the Patriots, 62.5 points to 59.5. To begin with, CHA crew crossovers Ryan Boutcher and Tom Samph were at a practice on the river. High jumper Phil Thomas and sprinter Joe Breen were also missing, and shot put ace Wayne Crawford, the defending Inter-Ac champ, is still out of action because of knee surgery. The Blue Devils hope that he’ll be off the injured list in time for the league championships, which is considered to be a realistic goal. A few other CHA athletes who aren’t usually scorers were absent as well, and GA made do without sprinter Cole Ballay, who was away at a club soccer competition. The outcome of the April 18 meet, gave each team a 1-1 record in Inter-Ac dual meets.
Springside softball tames Tigers
from Germantown Friends The Northwest Philly softball rivalry between Springside School and Germantown Friends has produced some competitive contests in recent years, but last Wednesday’s game at GFS wasn’t one of them.
PC lax comeback not enough as
GA girls prevail
After jumping ahead 7-1 in the first 19 minutes of last Thursday’s Girls Inter-Ac lacrosse clash at Penn Charter, visiting Germantown Academy hung on for a 13-11 victory, thanks to four goals from junior midfielder Colleen Magarity and three from senior center Jenna Washabaugh. Annie McKenna, a junior home, rang up a hat trick for the hosts. At the other end, sophomore goaltender Robin McDowell recorded 14 saves to keep the Quakers in contention. Patriots keeper Kyra Dwinell made eight stops for the victors as GA climbed to a record of 2-0 in the league and 10-2 overall.
Success for CHA, Springside
crew A fresh approach served Chestnut Hill Academy and Springside School well on Sunday at the fifth (and final) regatta in the Manny Flick crew series. Two newly conceived crews, a varsity double for the boys and a JV four for the girls, each netted a first-place finish for the Blue Devils and the Lions.
Mount finishes Manny Flick series
with flair
In Philadelphia-area high school crew, the closest thing to regular-season competition occurs in the five installments of the annual Manny Flick series. The final Flick of 2006 was Sunday on the Schuylkill, and for Mount St. Joseph Academy, six first-place performances and one second-place effort indicated that the Magic is ready to tackle the major regattas, coming up in May.
Penn Charter’s White passes
AD torch to Tori Small
Earlier this month, Penn Charter announced that former assistant Diana Caramanico was stepping up to become head coach of the Quakers’ girls basketball team. Now word has come of a change at the top post in the girls athletic program: Longtime Athletic Director Debbie White is handing the reins to one of her former standouts, 1996 graduate Tori Small, formerly Tori Marabella. Small, who grew up in Chestnut Hill, is the daughter of restaurateur Gabe Marabella and of Judy Marabella, who served a five-year hitch as athletic director at Springside School. A lacrosse team captain at Penn Charter, Small went on to play at Penn State, and from 2002 to 2005 she was an assistant lacrosse coach at Drexel University. She returned to Penn Charter last fall to teach in the physical education department, and is the assistant girls lacrosse coach, as well. White will chair the P.E. and health department, and will continue to teach at the school and remain head coach of the lacrosse team.
