Germantown Friends School fourth and fifth
graders (standing, from l-r) Halley Cromley, Kara Pride,
Ariama Reichert and (kneeling, from l-r) Allison Berman and Olivia
Gallagher-Kowit were among 600 Earth Force students from the greater
Philadelphia region celebrating the seventh annual youth summit
day at the Philadelphia Zoo last week. Delaware Valley Earth Force,
the local branch of the national nonprofit Earth Force organization,
in conjunction with the zoo, Philadelphia School District officials
and the Philadelphia Higher Education Network, held the event to
recognize the hard work and commitment of hundreds of schoolchildren
throughout the year in promoting environmental activism and good
citizenship. As part of this year’s theme, “Environmental
Citizenship,” students unveiled projects they designed to
solve a local community environment issue.

Make every day Earth Day!
Lower school Springside students celebrated Earth Day a few days
early this year by planting native trees in the Wissahickon Woods
behind their school. Under the leadership of Fairmount Park’s
Volunteer Coordinator, David Bower, students and parents planted
82 native trees (chokeberry, winterberry, viburnum, and magnolia)
over the two-day period. Pictured are Sydney Caplan of North Wales

The state Department of
Transportation is working on refilling the cobblestones along
Germantown Avenue. Nick Martino, PennDOT’s assistant district
executive of maintenance, said work began about two weeks ago and
should be complete by the May 7 Garden Festival. Martino said the
Avenue will not be fully closed during the duration of the maintenance
— though it was closed briefly last Thursday night. However,
workers may have to shut down lanes temporarily. Gene Blaum, assistant
press secretary with PennDOT, said this is a regular maintenance
project, occurring when needed (usually about every other year),
and is completely separate from the full Avenue restoration project
currently being planned.
