After starting off with Tuesday’s 11 6 loss to Villa Maria, the Mount St. Joseph Academy lacrosse team could easily have ended its first official week of competition with an 0-3 record.
The Magic trailed both Catholic Academies rival Gwynedd Mercy and Western Pennsylvania’s Sewickley Academy at the half, but rallied in the second period both times, beating Gwynedd’s Monarchs on Thursday, 11-9, and then scoring twice in the last two minutes to shade Sewickley, 8-7, the following afternoon.

There were a few spritzes of rain at the Chestnut Hill Academy track on Saturday, but for the most part Phoebus focused his brilliance upon the fifth running of the CHA relays.
Ten teams assembled for the event, including three of CHA’s Inter-Ac League peers, and during the course of the competition, six meet records fell by the wayside.

Mount St. Joseph’s softball squad jumped right into Athletic Association of Catholic Academies competition in its first official game of 2006, scoring three times in the bottom of the seventh inning but still coming up one run short in a 6-5 loss to visiting Villa Joseph Marie last week.
Previously, the Magic had split a pair of scrimmages, with a win over Springfield High School and a loss to Archbishop Ryan.
For the Jems of Villa Joe, Jamie Kloss went the distance on the mound March 28, striking out four while giving up 10 hits and one base on balls. The two sophomore pitchers employed by the Mount didn’t offer up any walks at all. Jo Krasnisky worked the first six frames, leaving with five strike-outs and seven hits on her ledger, and in the seventh Emily McCulloch gave up one hit with no strike-outs.

Mount St. Joseph Academy sent its freshman and novice eights into major race action for the first time on Sunday, when the third week of the Manny Flick series brought continued success for the Magic’s more seasoned crews.
The varsity eight (Jane Mieczkowski – coxswain, Megan McCusker – stroke, Steph Farris, Francesca Crozier-Fitzgerald, Meredith Walsh, Mary Grace Maggiano, Meg Kehan, Emily Walker, Hilary O’Shea) once again shrugged off a late challenge from Holy Spirit, winning in 5:16.25 with about six seconds to spare. Leading from the start and still able to produce a kick at the end of the race, the Magic V-8 appears to have assimilated its two sophomores (Kehan and O’Shea) and is becoming a refined unit.
