Obituaries

Angelo Aiello

Angelo Aiello

Angelo Ralph Aiello, 79, of Maple Shade, N.J., formerly of Chestnut Hill, died on Feb. 22.

Mr. Aiello was the son of the late Maria and Luigi Aiello, founder of the Chestnut Hill Bocce Club.

Mr. Aiello served in the 25th Infantry Division in World War II. He was stationed in the Philippines installing telephone and communication lines in the Sulu Islands and later in occupied Japan (in Kyoto and Osaka).

Mr. Aiello is survived by a son, John, and a daughter, Louise Aiello-Reimal; a former wife, Emma Mancuso; two brothers, Gabriel of Fort Myers, Fla. and Louis, of Philadelphia; two granddaughters, Tina Reimal and Charlean Reimal; a great-granddaughter, Eris; and a great-grandson, Brodden.

A funeral Mass will be said on April 5 at Our Mother of Consolation Church, 9 E. Chestnut Hill Ave. in Chestnut Hill, 19118.

Memorial contributions may be made to Our Mother of Consolation Church.

 

Duffield Ashmead III

Duffield Ashmead III

Duffield Ashmead 3rd, 81, of Chestnut Hill and St. Hubert’s, N.Y., died on March 31. He grew up in St. David’s and graduated from Episcopal Academy in 1943. He served in the U.S. Navy for three years, leaving active service as a Lt. j.g. He received a B.A. in mathematics from the University of Pennsylvania in 1948 and subsequently worked at the Philco Corp. as a mathematical engineer for seven years. He returned to the University of Pennsylvania for law school, where he was a member of the Law Review. After graduation in 1958, he joined the firm of Drinker, Biddle & Reath, where he specialized in estate planning and probate until his retirement in 1991.

An active member of the Episcopal Church, he was a vestryman of St. Martin-in-the-Fields, served for 10 years on the Standing Committee of the Episcopal Diocese of Pennsylvania, and for several years as Chancellor. A devoted alumnus of Episcopal Academy, he was a member of the Development Committee and a class agent. He served on the board of the Philadelphia Unit of Recording for the Blind and Dyslexic and remained an enthusiastic reader for them until shortly before his death.

Mr. Ashmead was an avid reader. He enjoyed crossword puzzles, fly-fishing and golf.

Mr. Ashmead is predeceased by his first wife, Penelope (Merritt). He is survived by his wife of 23 years, Mary (Saunders Aspinwall); a son, Duffield 4th and a daughter, Merrit Robinson; a sister, Nadine Trapnell; stepchildren William Aspinwall and Taylor Aspinwall; and grandchildren Harrison Duffield Robinson and Maxwell deQuartel Robinson.

A memorial service was held on March 18 at St. Martin-in-the-Fields Church. Memorial contributions may be made to Recording for the Blind and Dyslexic, Philadelphia Unit, 215 W. Church Rd., King of Prussia, PA 19406.

 

Margaret Wall

Margaret Ellen Wall (Bullock), 86, died on March 18. She was born in North Bend, Wis., the daughter of Jeanie McAdam and Robert Bullock.

Mrs. Wall was in the Army during World War II and it was there she met her husband of 51 years, Charles A. Wall, who predeceased her. She lived in Mt. Airy and was an active member of Holy Cross Catholic Church.

Mrs. Wall is survived by two sons, James R. (Jane) of Allentown and William J. of Philadelphia; two daughters, Jean Wall Owens (Thomas) of Birmingham, Ala., and Margaret Ellen Wall of Philadelphia; two brothers, William Bullock of La Crosse, Wis., and Robert Bullock of North Bend, Wis.; and eight grandchildren.

A funeral Mass was held at Holy Cross Church, on March 21. Interment at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery was private.
