GFS soccer star signs with Wake Forest

The Germantown Friends School boys’ varsity soccer team and coaches surround senior Mbizo Mzamane after he signed with Wake Forest. (L to R) Assistant coach Brett Turner, Marek Loder, Joshua West, Jack Meigs, Mbizo Mzamane, David Robb, Nate Gemberling-Johnson, Zach Barrett, Alex Fernberger, Coach Matt Zipin.

Mbizo Mzamane, a seniorat Germantown Friends School, has signed a letter of intent to play soccer at Wake Forest University. Mzamane, who set a Friends Schools League record of 34 goals, has committed to play for the Demon Deacons.

A four-year Varsity starter for the Tigers, Mzamane was co-captain and MVP in his senior year. His career stats include 57 goals and 19 assists. He was selected to the Pennsylvania All-State and All Southeastern Pennsylvania teams, as well as the FSL All-League team. GFS coach Matt Zipin of East Falls states, “His offensive playmaking and scoring was unmatched.” As a scholar-athlete, Mzamane has balanced a rigorous academic program at GFS with tremendous dedication to the sport of soccer.

Mzamane, who is from South Africa, returns there each summer by invitation of various soccer organizations to practice and play. The South African embassy called him this week to extend congratulations. At Wake Forest, in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, Mzamane will bring his competitive fire and hard work to an NCAA Division I team that was ranked in the top 20 in the country in 2005. Mzamane stated, “The Wake Forest men's soccer program has placed great faith in me. I am determined to work hard and excel. Wake's faith has not been misplaced."

Mzamane added, "I have been raised to always acknowledge, appreciate and never take for granted the opportunity and ability to achieve my goals, and everyone in my life that has extended a hand to that cause. And truly, if it were not for the support of family and friends, opportunities like this would not have come to bear.”
