No contract yet for New Covenant
by Kristin Pazulski
The New Covenant Church, 7500 Germantown Ave., is looking
to propose plans for a 169- to 175-bed facility that will house about
50 homeless families. The proposal is in response to a general request
from the city’s Office of Emergency Shelters and Services, however,
as of yet no contract has been signed with the city, and the proposal
for the housing has not been sent in, according to Michael Quintero-Moore,
public relations representative for Miller’s office.
A meeting was held on Thursday, March 9, with New Covenant Church leaders,
Councilwoman Donna Reed Miller (8th District) and community organizations
to quell local rumors regarding the proposal and update the community
on plans.
Quintero-Moore said that the New Covenant Church officials are still
“dotting their I’s and crossing their T’s” in
the proposal. New Covenant officials did not return calls to the Local
by press time.
An open-community meeting, sponsored by Miller’s office, West Mt.
Airy Neighbors and East Mt. Airy Neighbors, will be held on Wednesday,
March 29, at 7 p.m. at the Brossman Center of Lutheran Theological Seminary,
7301 Germantown Ave.
