CHCA annual meeting date set
by Meredith Sonderskov
A wide variety of topical issues were on the agenda of the monthly board
meeting of the Chestnut Hill Community Association on Thursday, Feb. 23
at the Hiram Lodge.
The interview process for the new Local editor is underway with the 24
applicants, according to Tom Ivory, search committee chair. A job description
was handed out and briefly discussed. A board member asked if the list
of applicants names would be available and Ivory replied that for privacy
of the candidates, most of whom are currently employed, the list will
remain confidential. The search committee’s recommendation for a
new editor will be made at the March meeting of the CHCA board, said Ivory.
Nominating committee chair Stuart Graham asked for members who would
be interested in serving on the committee for next year’s board.
Anyone who is not an officer is eligible, said Graham. After any disinterested
members were removed from consideration, a secret ballot was taken and
the following received the highest number of votes: Thomas Hemphill, Ron
Recko, Walter Sullivan and Brien Tilley. Nomination forms for board elections
will be published in the Local beginning in March. All nominations must
be received by March 23.
The receipts for the Community Fund drive now total $30,000, stated Brien
Tilley. This is half of what was raised last year, so a second mailing
will be going out shortly and there will be phone solicitations from Tilley’s
office on Wednesday evenings, March 1 and 8, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Volunteers
are needed.
Social Chairman Dina Hitchcock announced that the annual meeting of the
CHCA will be held April 27 at the Chestnut Hill Presbyterian Church. The
prominent speaker will be announced soon. There is no charge to attend
the meeting at 7 p.m., however there will be a charge for the dinner prior
to the meeting. Last year approximately 100 members attended.
An ad campaign is being developed to attract new members to the CHCA,
according to Jane Piotrowski, chair of the membership committee. A suggestion
was made that ads be placed in the Springfield paper in order to reach
our neighbors in surrounding communities as membership in the CHCA is
not limited to residents of Chestnut Hill.
Ann Ward Spaeth distributed proposed 2006 CHCA election procedures. After
some discussion, these were adopted as amended. The board commended her
for the time and effort put into preparing this document.
Treasurer Mark Keintz gave the monthly financial report and reiterated
that only money in hand by March 15 will be budgeted to the community
groups that have made requests for grants. There will be a budget meeting
on March 2.
The installation of new trees and street lights will begin soon, according
to John O’Connell, board member and 9th Ward Democratic committee
co-chair. Resources are available from state funds for community development.
In the fall a large scale public art project, AbZOOlutely Chestnut Hill,
is being brought to the Hill by the CHCA and the business improvement
district, Maxine Dornemann, president of the CHCA, announced to the board.
In November there will be an auction of the statues and proceeds will
be split between the Chestnut Hill District and the Community Fund. Dornemann
encouraged businesses and individuals to sign up as sponsors that are
needed for each animal.
Dornemann also announced that plans for the development of the Greenfield
property, “Sugarloaf” on Germantown Avenue will be coming
from Chestnut Hill College, the new owners.
The time being late, several items were moved to the next meeting of
the board, March 23.
