CHC women slay Giants, 77-43
by TOM UTESCHER
In a non-conference home game last Thursday night, the women’s
basketball team at Chestnut Hill College made a sweet 16th entry in its
win column, a laudable achievement for a squad that has only half that
number of players on its entire roster.
Senior Bethanne Castone collected 22 points and seven rebounds and freshman
Marianne Finfrock tossed in 16 points to lead the Griffins to a 77-43
victory over the Keystone College Giants. Chestnut Hill improved to 16-6
overall while remaining at 6-4 in the Atlantic Women’s College Conference,
with a trip to the AWCC Tournament in the offing this weekend.
Keystone, which hails from the Scranton area, headed back upstate with
an overall mark of 5-19.
Before CHC hit its first shot from the floor, the Giants enjoyed a 4-1
advantage in the game, but the Griffins got rolling when Castone strung
together a 15-foot jumper, a fast break lay-up, and a three-point bucket.
Penetration by speedy guard Shant’e Nelson helped Keystone catch
its hosts at 12-12, and a little later the Giants led for the last time
in the game at 15-14 with under eight minutes left in the first half.
Coming off the bench, Finfrock perked up the Chestnut Hill offense, hitting
two three-pointers and a pair of lay-up as the locals finished out the
period with a 23-4 run. The count was 37-19 at the interlude, as Castone
and Finfrock each had 10 points in the book and Andrea Carter had seven
for the leaders.
Keystone only produced three field goals in the first nine minutes of
the second stanza, and by that point CHC had the Giants doubled up at
54-27. Things didn’t get any better for the visitors, and the Griffins’
lead reached its zenith at 38 points (77-39) before Keystone tacked on
a free throw and a three-point field goal in the last half-minute of the
game.
CHC’s Carter recorded 10 points, three steals, and a game-high
17 rebounds, while Lindsey Tornetta chalked up 11 points and seven rebounds,
and Tara Walsh turned in five points, seven rebounds, and five assists.
Although playing with several chronic injuries, Kate Quintus contributed
six points for the Griffins, whose total was rounded out by four points
from Judy Parise (six assists) and three from Krista DeFlaviis.
For Keystone, Nelson finished with a dozen points and Jessica Kobesky
had 17 points and 11 rebounds, while no other scorers for the Giants had
more than four points for the night.
