Quakers drub Devils in squash square-off
by TOM UTESCHER

For the Chestnut Hill Academy squash team, the task of repeating as Inter-Ac League champion began to look a lot tougher after last Tuesday’s home match.

Going in, both the Blue Devils and the visiting Penn Charter Quakers were undefeated in league play, and it was the Quakers who stayed that way, handing the Hill lads a 6-1 defeat. Charter (9-1, 7-0 league) had already swept third-place Episcopal Academy in a pair of 5-2 matches, while Chestnut Hill (7-5, 5-1) won by the same score over at Episcopal and has a home rematch with the Churchmen still on the schedule. The second clash between the Devils and Quakers takes place today (2/16) at Penn Charter.

At CHA last week a crowded gallery quickly learned the outcome of the contest, as the Quakers won the first four bouts to be completed. Charter’s sophomore siblings, Alex and Matt Domenick, each dispatched their Blue Devil rivals in straight games. It was Alex over Nick Pearson at number two, 9-5, 9-3, 9-3, and Matt defeating Tyler Stout, 9-2, 9-4, 9-2.

In other three-game matches, visiting number five Ross Harrow, a junior, won 9-4, 10-9, 9-2 over Steve Wetherill, while in the seventh spot another 11th grader, Pat Brady, knocked off Chestnut Hill’s Ian Holton, 9-4, 9-5, 9-0.

CHA number four Pat Davis saved the Devils from a shutout, as he beat fellow senior Adam Greenberg, 9-0, 9-2, 4-9, 9-3. At number one, Brooks Russell won the opener for the home team at 10-8, then Quakers sophomore Chris Callis claimed the next three games at six, four, and four. Freshman Steve Harrington, PC’s number six, posted scores of 9-7, 9-7, 8-10, and 10-8 in beating Bob Goldman of the Blue Devils.

Penn Charter picked up another win in an exhibition bout, with sophomore number eight David Hilton winning in four games over CHA’s Dave DiDonato
