Owls overcome Springside squash, 6-1
by TOM UTESCHER
Springside School was on its home courts for last Thursday’s
squash rematch with Girls Inter-Ac rival Agnes Irwin, but despite the
familiar surroundings the Lions suffered another 6-1 loss to Irwin’s
Owls.
Springside, fighting an uphill battle in the league this year, fell to
0-4 in the Inter-Ac, and 5-4 overall. The Lions’ last win had come
on the previous Saturday, when they defeated Baltimore’s Bryn Mawr
School, 5-2.
Three days later, Springside hosted Episcopal Academy for an Inter-Ac
tilt, and despite an earlier 1-6 setback at the hands of the Churchwomen,
the outlook for the Lions was a bit better this time around as EA arrived
without ailing number one Logan Greer. The Churchwomen had to bump all
of their other players up one rung on the team ladder, but still were
able to pull out a 4-3 win over the Chestnut Hill girls.
The wins for the Lions, all by 3-0 scores, came from number one Emery
Maine, number six Gretchen Carlson, and number seven Leslie Jacoby.
Maine stayed undefeated through the Irwin match on Thursday, preventing
an Owls sweep with a 3-0 win over fellow senior Toby Eyre. The Springside
number one locked up the first two games at 9-6, 9-2, and built up a 5-2
lead in the third. Eyre answered with five straight points to go up 7-5,
Maine moved back in front to play for match point at 8-7, then Eyre rallied
again to win the game at 10-8. A determined Maine took the first five
points of the fourth game en route to a 9-2 victory.
The only other match to go past three games occurred in the seventh spot,
where Jacoby was finally worn down by Irwin’s Lexy Pierce, 4-9,
6-9, 9-7, 9-5, 9-7. Another one of Irwin’s five seniors, Liza Stokes,
was a 9-0, 9-1, 9-1 winner over Springside number two Nina Testa, and
Owls number three Whitney Roller defeated the hosts’ Alison Curry,
9-3, 9-0, 9-0.
The Owls emerged with a record of 4-1 in Inter-Ac competition. Not having
faced Episcopal yet, Irwin has lost only to Penn Charter, which prevailed
4-3 on the strength of Britt Hebden’s victory over Toby Eyre in
the top spot.
