Mount swimmers conquered by Colonials
by TOM UTESCHER
Mount St. Joseph Academy’s swim team launched the
second week of the new year with a short road trip to Plymouth Whitemarsh
Senior High School, where the Magic turned in a number of strong individual
performances, but came up short in the final team score, 109-76.
The locals saw their record slide to 1-6 on the season, and Plymouth
Whitemarsh reached a 4-1 mark with the victory. A shoulder troubled by
tendonitis has kept senior distance swimmer Kara Lederer out of the pool
since Christmas, and while she’s been sidelined, the Magic have
lost by single-digit margins to Springfield High School and Central Bucks
West.
“This is definitely a case of our record now showing how good this
team is,” commented MSJ coach Janet Tompkins, whose squad recorded
its lone victory against Central Bucks South.
Last Monday, Plymouth Whitemarsh dominated the freestyle events, while
the Mount fared better in the specialized strokes. In the individual medley,
the Magic’s Jackie Hain placed first in two minutes, 20.78 seconds,
well ahead of PW’s Kelli Komorrowski (2nd; 2:26.19) and Alyssa Dragone
(3rd; 2:26.48), and Hain also won the breaststroke (1:11.49), while second
and third went to Sarah Miller (1:12.61) and Sarah Baillie (1:15.03) of
the Colonials.
In the backstroke, Kristen McCabe (1:05.75) and Caroline Menapace (1:09.49)
gave the Magic a one-two finish, and third went to PW’s Tara DiNardo
(1:12.45), and in the butterfly McCabe (1:02.70) and Menapace (1:06.93)
placed second and third, respectively, behind the winner for the Colonials,
Kate Chialastri (1:01.71).
In the 200 medley relay at the start of the meet, McCabe (1st leg), Menapace
(3rd) and Hain (anchor), teamed with Athena Diaconis (2nd) to win in 1:58.17.
The runners-up from PW were Kelly Moyer, Baillie, Dragone, and Carolyn
Fazzini (2:01.56), and third went to the MSJ quartet of Lauren Lahann,
Michelle Lally, Colleen Beichert, and Mary Maginnis (2:09.18).
Mount diver Caitlin O’Connell doesn’t get a chance to compete
in a lot of meets because many venues aren’t equipped for her event,
so at PW she took advantage of the opportunity to perform by taking first
place with a total of 164.55 points, edging out Chelsea LaPent of the
host team, with 161.80. The Colonials’ Katie Albanese (152.70) and
Tara Gordon (146.05) garnered third and fourth place on the springboard.
Plymouth Whitemarsh freestyle sprinter Kim McManus led the field in both
the 50 (26.56 seconds) and the 100 (58.72). In the shorter race, MSJ’s
Diaconis was second (27.15) and Fazzini of the Colonials was third (27.23),
and in the 100 PW’s Komorrowski was runner-up (1:00.64) and Nicole
Rossetti of the Mount was third (1:01.00).
Courtney Baird led a one-two-three finish for the hosts in the 200 freestyle
with a winning time of 2:02.48, and she was followed by Chialastri (2:03.96)
and Miller (2:05.86). Baird also won the 500 freestyle, clocking in at
5:22.47 to top Julie Erhart of the Magic (5:27.31) and PW teammate Colleen
McCreesh (6:06.83).
A time of 1:47.05 in the 200 freestyle relay clinched a win for the Colonial
quartet of Chialastri, Fazzini, McManus, and Baird, and the runner-up
team from Mount St. Joe consisted of Diaconis, Megan Held, Rossetti, and
Erhart (1:51.05). Clocking in third at 1:51.59 were PW’s Phoebe
Cornog, Moyer, Lauren Puglia, and Kasey McManus.
The 400 free relay went to the hosts’ Komorrowski, Kim McManus,
Baird, and Chialastri in 4:02.41, the Magic were second (4:07.29) with
Rossetti, Erhart, Hain, and McCabe, and a Colonial combo consisting of
Puglia, Cornog, Kasey McManus, and Miller finished third (4:09.55).
