Publisher’s Committee may lose Parry, Walsh
by Jennifer Katz
At its meeting on Jan. 12, the Chestnut Hill Community
Association’s Executive Committee moved one step closer to removing
two current members of the Publisher’s Committee, including current
committee chair George Parry and fellow committee member Lawrence Walsh
amid reports of strife and broken promises. The Publisher’s Committee
oversees operations at the Chestnut Hill Local as well as the search committee
to find and hire a permanent editor for the Local. According to Vice President
of Operations, Chris Kemezis, the two men have not been getting along
for weeks and “can’t even be in the same room.”
With Kemezis’s help, Walsh and Parry entered into a gentlemen’s
agreement to each resign on condition of the other’s resignation.
Walsh reneged, said Kemezis, prompting him to ask the executive committee
to step in to resolve the problem. “This is too important of a juncture
to allow the committee to be sidelined by this personality conflict,”
said Kemezis.
In response to Thursday night’s developments, Walsh said, “I’m
elated. I’ve carried around a resignation letter in my pocket for
two months now.” Walsh said that while he originally agreed to resign
upon Parry’s resignation, he later decided that another committee
member, Joe Pié, should also resign. “The first deal was
just Parry, but then I thought that Joe’s presence was just so destructive
that he should go too,” explained Walsh.
The Local attempted to speak with Parry; however, he was not available
for comment by the deadline for this article.
The committee bandied several ideas around before deciding on a suggestion
from member Tia Burke that they remove Walsh and Parry from the committee,
appoint two new members and name one of them as new chair. The official
recommendation and subsequent action is expected at the next full CHCA
Board meeting on Jan. 26, at 7:30 p.m. at Hiram Lodge.
