by CAROLE BOYNTON
A peaceful Saturday morning in Chestnut Hill was shattered when, at 9:11 a.m., on Dec. 31, an unknown black male walked into Sovereign Bank, 8623 Germantown Ave., and walked up to one of the teller’s windows.

Hoping 2006 will be a more joyful time, as we review the past year
compiled by CAROLE BOYNTON
THE WAIT MAY HAVE BEEN OVER. Five months after the first of two severe storm systems forced the closure of Cresheim Valley Drive, U.S. Congressman Chaka Fattah called on Mayor John Street to open the city’s coffers for the immediate repair of the major artery, promising federal reimbursement.

It is time to investigate SEPTA
By JIM FOSTER
With increasing frequency, we read and hear of the federal investigations into city government and it seems that malfeasance and manipulation by authority figures, along with misuse of public funds are not far under the surface. But until very recently no one, even those delegated with the responsibility, choose to look. However, the second-largest taxpayer funded bureaucracy in the Delaware Valley continually operates with virtual blank-check autonomy, and seems answerable to no one for its day-to-day operations and management practices.

Among Chestnut Hill’s old homes, quaint shops and great restaurants are some fascinating people. We pass by them everyday, knowing only the role they serve in our lives – waiter, shop clerk, neighbor, et al. We often don’t know their passions, heartaches or goals. Take Marion Ingram, for example

Paula Riley of Chestnut Hill and her son, Kevin, have a special reason to be thankful in the new year.

Just one New Year’s resolution: love your kids more
by PAULA M. RILEY
Over the years, my resolutions ranged from the very easy (call my mother-in-law every Sunday) to those I’ve never quite accomplished (lose 20 pounds by Valentine’s Day). I employed many tactics — posting them on the fridge, sharing them with my spouse or setting them early. None of these methods proved successful.

Mixed financial picture forclassical music community
By MICHAEL CARUSO
As local lovers of classical music, opera and ballet look ahead into the new year, there are many sunny spots but a few troubling cloudy ones as well. While some of the resident ensembles are experiencing admirable growth and beneficial development, others are facing daunting financial challenges.

2005: The year in film (part one); several trenchant observations
by NATHAN LERNER
During the past year, I watched over 200 films. Some left me feeling exhilarated and transformed. Others evoked boredom and, in some instances, disgust. Here are a few observations, culled from the time that I spent in darkened theaters.

by TOM UTESCHER

Some habits are hard to break, and last week neither a previously unbeaten team from the George Washington Carver High School of Engineering and Science nor an improved Kennedy-Kenrick club could keep Mount St. Joseph Academy from winning the Catholic War Veterans Holiday Basketball Tournament for the fifth year in a row.

Ivy leagues accept area athletes early
by TOM UTESCHER
Mid-December is when most of the Ivy League universities answer high school hopefuls who’ve submitted “early action” applications, and after anxious hours checking mailboxes and special admissions websites, a number of area student-athletes recently learned that they’ll continue their playing careers at the prestigious schools they’d set their hearts on.

Springside School splits in holiday tourney
by TOM UTESCHER
Playing in the post-Christmas tournament hosted by a Neumann-Goretti High School ballclub that features three future NCAA Division I players, a realistic goal for Springside’s hoop squad was to win one of its two tourney outings.
