Mount hockey falls to Emmaus
By TOM UTESCHER
ALLENTOWN - When Sarah Reinprecht guided the ball through the circle with a series of brilliant dodges to give Mount St. Joseph a 1-0 lead in last Tuesday's state tournament opener, Magic supporters dared to entertain thoughts of an upset. Then, on this frigid evening on the artificial turf of J. Birney Crum Stadium, the Emmaus Green Hornets got hot. The perpetual District XI champions tied the game, pulled ahead with two seconds left in the first half, then struck two more times in the second period.
The 4-1 win moved the Hornets into the quarterfinals of the Class AAA tourney and hoisted their record to 23-1. The single blemish on their ledger reflected a 2-1 loss to the top-ranked team in the country, Eastern High School of Gibbsboro, NJ. The Mount Magic, champions of the Athletic Association of Catholic Academies and the fifth seed from District I for the PIAA tourney, sheathed their sticks for the season with a final record of 23-3.
"This team is far-and-away the best team we've played," Reinprecht said of Emmaus.
Senior classmate Nina Ferrier concurred: "It was great competition. Everyone...
Inter-Ac hockey title goes to PC, tourney to GA
by TOM UTESCHER
How close in ability were the top four field hockey teams in the Girls Inter-Ac League this fall? Consider the fact that Penn Charter and Notre Dame Academy repeated as the league co-champions, but neither reached the finals of the Inter-Ac postseason tournament held earlier this month. Germantown Academy officially finished fourth in the 2004 campaign, but the Patriots got a big-time morale pump from the tourney, where they upset top-seeded Charter, 1-0, on Nov. 5, then scratched out a 3-2 victory over number three Episcopal in the finals on Nov. 6.
The Girls Inter-Ac championship is still bestowed upon the team with the best win/loss record in the single round of regular-season matches, and the outcome was decided in a spate of make-up games during the first week of November. On Nov. 1, senior Marie McKenna set up a goal by sophomore Marghi Walters to give Penn Charter a 1-0 victory at Notre Dame and at least a share of the title with a 6-1 final record in league play.
The following day, Notre Dame blasted Baldwin, 6-0, to also finish at 6-1. Episcopal, the team responsible for Charter's lone loss, had a chance to finish with that same mark, but the Churchwomen didn't take care of business in another Tuesday tilt. Goals by Chelsea Calio and Jane Gartland...
Close matches set stage for CHYSC U-14 championship
Ed. note: The following is a recap of last weekend's U-14 intramural playoff games.
Two hard fought soccer matches marked the opening round of the Chestnut Hill Youth Sports Club U-14 intramural playoffs on Nov. 13. Both were decided by two goals. In the first game, Liverpool prevailed 2-0 over Manchester United. From the outset, Liverpool's potent offense, led by Zack King, kept relentless pressure on Manchester. However, Manchester defenders, Valerie Bannan, Axel Tuveson, Helen Spencer-Wallace, Stewart Campbell and David Preiss, with some great, fully outstretched saves by goalie, Eric Herrara, held off Liverpool for most of the first half. Just when Manchester's offense had established some presence by moving the ball down to the Liverpool end, Liverpool broke through for the first goal on a great cross from Zack King to Isaac Roberts.
After the second half opened with additional chances for both squads, Isaac Roberts converted again for Liverpool's second goal. With the score still 2-0 late in the game, Manchester did not give up and repeatedly put the ball into scoring position, but could not seem to get off any clean shots on goal because Liverpool's defenders, Jared Kornfeld and Sam Reitzes, stymied every run and Liverpool goalie, Joey Killian, scooped up every shot that made it past the defenders.
A surprisingly strong Arsenal club upset Newcastle United 3-1 in an evenly...
