Carla R. Withers has been appointed youth director intern for Plymouth Valley Community Church in Plymouth Meeting. She will be responsible for planning, supervising and implementing all youth activities, including Sunday school, fundraising, service programs and social events for children in grades six through college.

Navy Midshipman Justin N. Sen, son of Nancy E. and Subrata K. Sen of Mt. Airy, recently completed Plebe Summer at the United States Naval Academy and has begun four years of preparation for commissioning as a Navy or Marine Corps officer. Sen is a 2003 graduate of La Salle College High School.

Philadelphia University has appointed Fernando Tovia, Ph.D., to head its new industrial and systems engineering program. The I.S.E. program will be the region's only full-time undergraduate program leading to a B.S. in Industrial and Systems Engineering.

The Philadelphia Affiliate of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation has awarded a $55,000 grant to the Haitian Community Center of Philadelphia for projects to advance breast health in the Delaware Valley.

Betty Gottlieb, Stephen Lawrence and Elliot Rothschild were elected to fill vacancies on the board of directors of the Riders' Club Cooperative for the 2004-2005 fiscal year at the club's recent annual meeting. Driver Richard H. Davis of Mt. Airy was named recipient of a Riders' Club hero award for his assistance on a cold, snowy day in January to a member who became locked out of her house upon returning from a doctor's appointment. Drivers Robert M. Mandeville of Germantown, Maureen L. Rogers of Andorra and Erika B. Wallace received outstanding service awards for service to members above and beyond the call of duty.

Harold B. Hairston Sr., of Mt. Airy, former Philadelphia Fire Commissioner, has been named to the board of trustees of Woods Services, which provides educational, residential and vocational services to children and adults with disabilities.

Century 21 Alliance, a leading real estate firm in Montgomery, Delaware, Bucks and Chester counties, has raised more than $79,000 for Easter Seals in its raffle of a 2005 Cadillac or Corvette. The grand total collected for all of 2004 will exceed $157,000 for Easter Seals.

Deslyn Lambert Mancini, M.D., of Wyncote, has joined the department of obstetrics and gynecology at Einstein Medical Center. She will practice at the Marion-Louise Saltzman Woman's Center at 5501 Old York Road, as well as at 1602-04 Wadsworth Ave., and in Bala Cynwyd. Dr. Mancini most recently worked as an instructor and practitioner at MCP Hahnemann University School of Medicine. Prior to that, she practiced at Chestnut Hill Ob/Gyn Associates in Flourtown.

Derek Green, of East Mt. Airy, has been named to American Lawyer Media's 2004 Lawyers on the Fast Track list. Selected by a statewide panel of lawyers, the award recognizes the top attorneys in Pennsylvania under age 40. Green is the president of East Mt. Airy Neighbors, Inc. and is the chief legislative aide and counsel for City Councilwoman Marian B. Tasco.

Dr. Jay Goldberg, of Chestnut Hill, is the director of the new Fibroid Center at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. He is also clinical assistant professor of obstetrics and gynecology at Jefferson Medical College.

Michael Greenbaum, of Lafayette Hill, is spending the fall 2004 semester studying in Madrid, Spain, through Syracuse University's Division of International Programs Abroad.

Jane H. Affleck, of Wyndmoor, a graduate of Penn Charter, is participating in St. Lawrence University's International Study Program in Kenya for the fall semester.

Sarah Lyons Flaherty, a 2002 graduate of Springside School and a junior at Franklin & Marshall College, is studying with the American University Center program in Aix-en-Provence, France, during the fall semester.

Natanya Apfelbaum, of Germantown, a senior at Central high School, was the millionth visitor to the National Constitution Center on Oct. 13.

Derek Banov, a junior at Chestnut Hill Academy, has been accepted into the People to People Future Leaders Summit in International Diplomacy in Washington, D.C. next summer. Banov was nominated and accepted for the honor based on outstanding scholastic merit, civic involvement and leadership potential.

Alexander Emmanuel Kaplan, of Chestnut Hill, has enrolled as a member of the class of 2008 at Dartmouth College. Kaplan is the daughter of Steven Kaplan and Ellen M. Kaplan.

Louise M. Greenwood, of Wyndmoor, a junior at William Smith College, is studying off campus in Ireland this semester. She is the daughter of J. Eric and Mary Jane Greenwood.

Jake Sand of Laverock, a pre-med freshman at Johns Hopkins University, made his debut on the Hopkins fencing team on Nov. 7, competing in both epee and saber. Jake won five straight bouts to aid the Blue Jays in their routs of Virginia Tech, St. John's, New Jersey Institute of Technology and Yeshiva University. Jake is a 2004 graduate of Germantown Friends School, where he was co-captain of the varsity basketball team. He received his fencing training from Maestro Mark Masters at the Fencing Academy of Philadelphia and was the winner of two dozen United States Fencing Association medals.

Matthew Roman, a 2003 graduate of Germantown Academy, is a disc jockey at WFNM, the Franklin & Marshall College radio station. Roman is a sophomore at F&M.
