The American Association for State and Local History (AASLH) has announced that Stenton Museum is the recipient of an AASLH Merit Award for the development of the History Hunters Youth Reporter Program. The AASLH Annual Awards Program, now in its 60th year, is the most prestigious recognition for achievement in the preservation and interpretation of state and local history.
Beth Hanselmann, a member of the mathematics faculty at Bishop McDevitt High School, was recently honored for excellence and dedication in the teaching profession from Golden Heart Group. Hanselmann is beginning her 35th year as a teacher; her 14th at McDevitt.

Metropolitan Career Center was recently awarded a $10,000 grant from the Clarence A. Rowell Fund through the PNC Advisors Charitable Trust Committee. The grant will help to fund STRIVE (Support and Training Result In Valuable Employees), a readiness program that has helped more than 1,400 low-income Philadelphia residents achieve long-term employment and economic self-sufficiency since 1997. Civilian David P. DiDonato, of Lafayette Hill, recently participated in the U.S. Naval Academy’s week-long summer seminar program in Annapolis, Md. During the program, DiDonato was introduced to academy life through a regimen of academics, physical training, intramural sports, sailing and seamanship, as well as leadership training and social activities.
Patricia M. Canning, of Chestnut Hill, has been appointed director of alumnae and alumni relations at Chestnut Hill College, her alma mater. Canning served in the Office of Institutional Advancement as director of corporate, foundation and government relations to 1986 to 1997. For the last eight years, she held several advancement positions at Germantown Academy in Fort Washington. In her new position, she will work with the college’s institutional advancement staff in building relationships with alums from all three schools – undergraduate, graduate, and continuing studies.
Joyce Huth Munro, Ph.D., of Wayne has been named the new dean of the school of graduate studies at Chestnut Hill College. She brings with her a 35-year career devoted to educational and academic administration, teaching and curriculum development. With Karen M. Paciorek, she is the co-author of the classic textbook, Early Childhood Education (McGraw-Hill/Dushkin), now in its 26th printing. Munro will oversee graduate school policies, curriculum and admissions.
Lynn Ortale, Ph.D., of Philadelphia, has been appointed the new dean for student life at Chestnut Hill College,. She spent the last 15 years at Saint Joseph’s University, where she was most recently assistant vice president for campus life. At Chestnut Hill College, she will provide leadership for residence life, student activities, multicultural life and orientation.

Earlier this year, Shelby Green, daughter of Michael and Victoria Green of Chestnut Hill, and eighth-grader at Springside School, submitted a poem to a contest that was held for young poets in grades K-12. Her poem was selected from thousands of entries as one of the top ten in her grade division. Each top ten winner receives special recognition in the poetry anthology, “A Celebration of Young Poets,”a complimentary copy of the anthology and a $50 savings bond.
