William A. Winterbottom
William A. Winterbottom, of the Unitarian Universalist House, passed away on July 29, 2005. He was the son of the late Asa and Edna Winterbottom, and brother of John Winterbottom.
The viewing was held on Aug. 3 at the Baptist Church of Germantown, followed by interment at Laurel Hill Cemetery.

Penelope Rainey
Penelope Rainey, 64, wife of Peter H. Reinke, died on July 26, after a five-year battle against cancer.
Mrs. Rainey grew up in Valley Forge, the daughter of Froehlich Rainey and Penelope Lewis. Her father was the long-time head of the University Museum. Mrs. Rainey graduated from the Baldwin School, received her B.A. (Phi Beta Kappa) from Radcliffe and her Ph.D. in classical philology from Columbia. She taught at Barnard, the University of Florida and Agnes Irwin School before coming to Germantown Friends in 1974.
Mrs. Rainey was head of the classics department, an erudite scholar and linguist. She was a nurturing teacher, and led student trips to classical sites in Italy, Greece, Turkey, and Tunisia. She published, through Bryn Mawr, two well-received commentaries on Plato’s Laches and on medieval Latin poetry, and was working on a third at her death.
Mrs. Rainey is survived by her husband, Peter H. Reinke, two daughters: Patricia V. Smith of Chestnut Hill and Pamela V. Kim of Ann Arbor, Mich; two step-children, Peter H. Reinke Jr. of Easton and Julie R. Hazzard of West Chester; six grandchildren; and her mother, Penelope Lewis of Hardwick, Vt.
Burial in Greensboro, Vt. will be private. There will be a memorial service in honor at the Germantown Friends Meeting on Sunday, October 2, at 8 p.m.
