On one of the more pleasant afternoons this April, Springside Chestnut Hill Academy’s girls hosted an Inter-Ac League tri-meet last Wednesday, running against Episcopal Academy and Agnes Irwin.

Not every event in the regular Inter-Ac meet program was held, and in one of the field events there were only two contenders. Still, the host Blue Devils had a measurable edge over the two visiting squads. Scoring the top three places, 112 points were up for grabs, with SCH collecting 56 of them, Episcopal 44 and the Irwin Owls, 12.

In previous league competition, Springside Chestnut Hill had beaten the girls of Germantown Academy and had lost to Penn Charter. However, dual and tri-meet results often are not a reliable indicator of what the outcome will be in the meet that really counts, the Inter-Ac championships.

The meet started with a comfortable 17.3-second victory in the 100 meter high hurdles by SCH freshman Esther Lamb, a Norwood Fontbonne Academy graduate. Senior Alexa Walls followed up with a win in the 100 meter dash (13.1 seconds), with Blue Devils sophomore Nilah Jordan coming in third.

In the 1600 meter run, Agnes Irwin junior Sanaiya Watts won (5:27.6) ahead of two Episcopal runners, but then SCH was back on top in the 4 x 100 meter relay. The Blue Devils turned in a time of 51.8 seconds, with Watts taking over the lead in the anchor leg. Ahead of her were sophomore Luna Moskal (lead-off), Jordan and junior Destiny Weal.

Covering that same distance on her own, SCH senior Allie Kitchell cruised to victory in the open 400 meters in 56.3 seconds, winning by more than seven seconds. She will continue her career at Towson University. Freshman Skai Williams then placed second for Springside Chestnut Hill in the 300 meter intermediate hurdles.

The 800 meter run featured Blue Devils senior Haley Unthank, who will run for Georgia Tech at the collegiate level. She stayed close behind Irwin’s Watts for much of the race, then passed the Owls runner in the final turn and won with a time of 2:24.8.

Jordan, the SCH 10th-grader, came in second in the 200 meter dash, which was followed by the longest race of the day, the 3200. Blue Devils junior Lilly Forrest had already run the mile, but she was able to come back and win easily in the 3200, clocking in at 13:36.3.

The final track event was to be the 4 x 400 relay, but this race wasn’t run due to a general lack of enthusiasm on the part of all three schools.

SCH did just as well in the field events as in the footraces, with junior Nayah Moore winning both the high jump (5’0”) and the triple jump (31’11.5”). Freshman Ava Roberts won the long jump (15’7.5”) and was runner-up in the shot put. No pole vault competition was held.
