Beatrice S. Moore, teacher

Beatrice S. Moore, 96. an English teacher in the Philadelphia public schools for three decades, died March 22 of dementia at the Terrace at Chestnut Hill-Meridian Senior Living.

In the course of her career, Dr. Moore taught English at Shoemaker Junior High School, Lincoln High School, Gratz High School and Northeast High School. She had been head of the English department at Gratz and Northeast.

She left Northeast in 1985 to teach English as an adjunct professor at St. Joseph’s University, where she established a scholarship fund for minority students and an endowment for the university, both in her name. She retired in 2001.

Born in Wilmington, N.C., she graduated from Willistown Industrial High School and received a bachelor’s degree in education from Knoxville College. She received a master’s degree from the University of Illinois and a doctorate in education from the University of Pennsylvania.

Dr. Moore was an avid traveler, and took students to Egypt, Africa China, Japan, Spain and Greece and later traveled with friends.

She was a member of the National Council of Teachers of English and the Modern Language Association of America.

She had been a member of Calvary Episcopal Church, St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, and St. Luke’s Episcopal Church.

She is survived by sons Samuel E. III and Terence; a daughter, Monica; and three grandchildren.  Her husband, Samuel E. Moore Jr., died in 1983.

A funeral service was held March 31 at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Germantown, with interment in Ivy Hill Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the above church at 5421 Germantown Ave., Philadelphia, PA 19144. – WF
