The Germantown Friends School Varsity Boys Soccer squad has had a fast start to their Friends Schools League season. The two victories last week came verses rival Friends’ Central on Tuesday afternoon (2-0) and again on Friday against Friends Select (5-0).

In a close battle at Friends’ Central, the game was scoreless at half, with both teams having significant chances on goal. GFS defense anchored by senior co-captain Pietro Berghella in goal, held strong. The Tigers stayed committed to marking hard and denying some fast-break plays by the Phoenix to get to the half-way point tied.

Midway into the second half, Nolan Grady ‘20 scored off of a cross by senior Max Seldin and then Seldin, again involved in the scoring, added the insurance goal for the Tigers.

Last year in league play, GFS and FCS went into overtime and ended in a tie. Earlier this season, they have had similar results with like opponents. This win will be tallied in the annual Felsen Cup competition between GFS and FCS. The cup is named in honor of David M. Felsen, who taught, coached and was an administrator at Germantown Friends School from 1966-1988 and Head of Friends’ Central School from 1988 to 2011.

The cup is awarded annually to the school with the most wins at the varsity level. Earlier this season, both Girls Tennis and Boys Cross Country added victories to gain the 3-1 edge for the Tigers in the cup standings.

On Friday, GFS again was on the road at Friends Select. Senior Captain Isaac Myran started the Tigers off with a successful penalty kick, with the next goal coming off of a corner served up by Sam Webber ’19 to freshman newcomer Arjun Ratnakar. The squad opened the flood gates a few minutes later with a goal by Max Seldin assisted by James Hobbs Pifer ’20 and then the roles were reversed for the fourth goal. Junior defender Jackson Craig put in his first varsity goal to round out the scoring for the Tigers.

This week, non-league opponents Germantown Academy will challenge the Tigers, while they will look to improve to the 3-0 in the league against Westtown on Thursday.
