On Saturday, July 15, Springside Chestnut Hill Academy hosted The Gerald Howard ’92 Memorial 5K Fun Run & Walk.
More than 50 family and friends honored the memory of the Chestnut Hill Academy alumnus, and father of two current SCH students, by taking part in the run that cut through campus into the Wissahickon trail and finished back at the school’s Maguire Stadium.
Howard died last year from a heart attack. His classmates organized the walk and run for their 25th reunion in May. Bad weather forced the class to reschedule the event for July 15.
The class raised $15,000 and a portion of the money was used to dedicate a highjump at Maguire stadium in Howard’s name.
Howard’s wife, Tamara Howard, and brother, Glenn Howard, spoke at the dedication and were grateful to have everyone present, celebrating and honoring the memory of beloved and courageous Gerald.
Gerald was an outstanding Track and Field athlete at CHA who still holds school records in the 100 meter, 200 meter, and high jump. He was the Inter-Ac Champion in the long jump, three-time 100 meter and high jump champion, and four-time 200 meter champion, as well as a three-time winner of the George Greenwood Award for scoring the most points in the Inter-Ac Championship Meet.
He attended the University of Virginia and was as a standout collegiate athlete.
The W. Gerald Howard ‘92 High Jump plaque will be installed soon on the west end of the Landreth Field track and field in Maguire Stadium.
