On May 16, residents of Philadelphia will go to the polls for the primary vote on a new District Attorney, City Controller, and number of judicial races.
The race for DA has been the most hotly contested of the season, as incumbent Democrat Seth William’s decision to not run for re-election leaves the position open to challengers from both parties. The race for the Democratic nomination is the most interesting, with about seven well-qualified candidates. They include Tariq El-Shabazz, Michael Untermeyer, Teresa Carr Deni, Joe Khan, Rich Negrin, Lawrence Krasner, and Jack O’Neill. The only Republican candidate entered in the race is Beth Grossman, a former Democrat.
The Democratic primary for City Controller will also be a tight race. Alan Butkovitz is facing a challenge from Rebecca Rhynhart, the former budget director for Mayor Kenney. The Democratic nominee will then go to the polls against the sole Republican candidate Mike Tomlinson.
