The Children’s Park of Chestnut Hill, better known as Jenks Playground, is celebrating its 20th birthday. The community is invited to a dance party featuring live dance music performed by local band Zick Zickler and the Nods from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday, May 20, at Christ Lutheran Ascension Church.

Come dance to hits from the ‘80s and ’90’s. Enjoy wine, beer, soda, and finger food donated by local businesses. The event directly follows the Jenks Funfest Carnival, which runs from 11 a.m.to 3 p.m. on the playground, so your family can play all day, then continue the festivities into the evening. Proceeds from the dance party will go to continued maintenance of the wooden structure and the grounds.

The park and its wooden playground were built in an 11-day community effort in 1997 after months of planning and fundraising. Today the playground and the gardens are enjoyed by Jenks students, residents, and visitors from all over Philadelphia and the surrounding suburbs all year long. Jenks Playground is well known as a leafy haven in which kids delight to run and play. It was featured two years ago on Channel 10, when the community came together in a fundraiser sponsored by TD Bank.

The playground is maintained by an all-volunteer Friends of the Children’s Park board, rather than the School District of Philadelphia. Without continued community support, the playground could not survive as the important kids’ play space and visitor destination it is. Recently, with help from TD Bank, the Friends of Jenks, the Chestnut Hill BID, and your community donations, the play structure received a handsome facelift: It was completely stained and resealed by Ryan Painting Co. This ensures that the structure will stay healthy and strong for years to come.

Come dance and celebrate the history of the Children’s Park, its impact on the residential and business experience, and hear about opportunities to help maintain this community treasure, including board positions, gardening, grounds maintenance and repair. Tickets for the dance party can be purchased at https://www.eventbrite.com/e/20th-anniversary-focp-dance-party-w-tickets-34231486297 or at the door. Children are welcome!

If you can’t attend the dance party, you can send a donation to Friends of Children’s Park in Chestnut Hill, P.O. Box 4355, Philadelphia, PA 19118. For more information, call 267-323-2458 or write to ekainer14@gmail.com.
