After 40 years, Dottie and Ed Sheffield announced that they are stepping down this month from their positions on the board of Bird in Hand consignment shop. The shop was started in 1976 by a group of residents under the leadership of Dottie Sheffield with the encouragement and support of the Chestnut Hill Business Association, the Chestnut Hill Community Fund and the Chestnut Hill Community Association.
From the beginning, the shop was a rousing success and the enterprise was incorporated as a nonprofit in 1981. For many years, Ed Sheffield served in a volunteer capacity as the nonprofit’s treasurer. Over the 40 years of its existence, the Bird in Hand shop raised and donated over a million dollars to various nonprofit community organizations for the betterment of the Chestnut Hill area.
“We want to thank all the wonderful consignors and volunteers, who over the last forty years have made the shop such a success,” said Dottie Sheffield. “We also recognize the tireless work of our bookkeeper, Howard Hansell and the contributions of the managers, Sydney Crimmins, Frances Hannafin and Irene Watson.”
