In a wet and wild Inter-Ac lacrosse match, host Germantown Academy pulled out a 7-6 victory last Thursday against the Springside Chestnut Hill Academy Blue Devils. The Patriots, who had prevailed 7-4 in an earlier meeting with SCH, attained a 2-4 mark in league play, while the Blue Devils went to 0-6.
The victors got two goals apiece from Jimmy McAfee and James Thatcher, while Gavin Derham, Brad Palmer, and Andrew Towne each added one goal and keeper Leroy Moser made seven saves in the GA cage. SCH goalie Bern Popky stopped 10 shots and Mac McLaughlin scored twice for the visitors, who got solo strikes from Matt Bown, Brendan Clark, Parker Popky, and C.J. Sweitzer.
GA held a slim lead much of the way in this soggy showdown, although SCH briefly had the score tied at 4-4 early in the third quarter. The Pats got up by two points with 2:37 to go in the fourth quarter, when Brad Palmer assisted Thatcher’s second goal, making it 7-5.
Later, a timekeeping error resulted in a stoppage of play and the resetting of the clock to 26 seconds remaining. In that short span, SCH did manage to get off two shots on-net. McLaughlin scored on the first, but GA’s Moser turned away the second attempt to preserve a Patriot win.
