In the fourth Manny Flick regatta of the season last Sunday (the third installment on April 3 had been cancelled due to high winds), all of the boys’ races took place in the morning and at midday. The lads from Germantown Academy, Germantown Friends, Penn Charter and Springside Chestnut Hill faced “bracing” temperatures as the last of Saturday’s snow was still visible in a few sheltered spots.

Leading off the entire race program, SCH junior Nelson Crane got done with his race as quickly as he could. The former coxswain turned novice rower won his race in the single in six minutes, 32.0, seven seconds ahead of a Haverford School rival.

In a widely-spaced field in the first flight of the novice quad, a GFS foursome (Henry Ziegler, Bix Komita-Moussa, Wiley Corlett, Seve Reitano) was able to capture third place with a time of 8:08.34 as three of the original six entries either dropped out or were disqualified. GA placed third in the second section as Derek Walkush (stroke), Andy Huang, Max Donches, and Pedro Sobral finished up in 6:02.54, while fifth place in the same flight went to Penn Charter’s Nick Djerassi (stroke), Cole Frieman, Ryan Milkman, and Reid Kleinman in 6:13.95.

In the JV single, Charter’s Stephen Flemming came downstream in 5:42.37, which positioned him second in his flight and second overall in terms of time.

GA’s time in the JV double was not as fast as those in the first flight, but Patriots Nick Moeller (stroke) and Isaac Wilkins landed in the runner-up spot in the second flight with a figure of 5:37.44. In the JV quad the best performance by an area foursome was given by Graham Arms (stroke), Preston Choe, Tunde Sogo, and Luke Cartrite of the GFS Tigers. Third in their flight, their time of 5:15.47 put them smack in the middle of the nine boats in the category.

SCH, GFS and GA were all represented in the lightweight double event. In flight one, Malvern Prep produced the top overall time of 5:37.01, with the Blue Devils (Hudson Smith, Damian Betancourt) coming in second in 5:40.12 and the Tigers (Gabe Sher, Ethan Shen) third in 5:43.95. Ridgewood (N.J.) High School won the second section in 5:41.62, and the GA Patriot pair of Carter Seggev (stroke) and Decker Wentz placed third in 5:52.41.

The same three schools, plus Penn Charter, turned up in the varsity double category. Although PC’s Gordon Robertson (stroke) and Cesar Centeno won the second of the four flights in 5:36.91, James Wright (stroke), and Andrea Berghella of GFS actually locked in a faster time (5:28.65) while placing second in the fourth flight. The Tigers had the fifth-fastest time overall in the field of 18.

Bakari Porter (stroke) and Chris Markos of Springside Chestnut Hill were one spot behind GFS in flight four (6:13.16), while in the third flight, a time of 6:09.15 netted third place for GA’s Sam Trombetta (stroke) and John Taggart.
