On Tuesday, March 15, Democratic candidate Tonyelle Cook-Artis won 79 percent of the total votes in the 200th State Representative special election to beat out her Republican opponent Latryse McDowell. Cook-Artis will complete the remaining term of former State Representative Cherelle Parker who is the newly elected ninth district Councilwoman.

The 200th District includes most of the 9th, 21st and 22nd wards and all of the 50th. According to the City Commissioner's office, only 4,734 people voted in the election. Cook-Artis received 3,777 votes. McDowell had 206 votes and 751 people voted for a write-in candidate.

In the 9th Ward, which includes all of Chestnut Hill and part of Mt. Airy, Cook-Artis received 498 votes.

“I am humbled and honored at the opportunity to serve the constituents of the 200th district,” Cook-Artis said. “I am looking forward to working across the aisle to build consensus in the House and to help bring much needed resources to the district. Thank you to the voters in the 200th district who had faith in my ability to represent their interests in Harrisburg.”

She will be sworn in early April in Harrisburg along with Democratic candidate Lynwood Savage who won a seat in the 192nd district.

Cook-Artis served as the Chief of Staff to former State Representative Cherelle Parker and has more than 20 years of experience in government and community organization. She intends to move her efforts towards the April 26th Democratic Primary in order to be re-elected to a full term in the November general election. She is the Democratic endorsed candidate in the upcoming primary race.
