CHCA approves new board for Local

The board of the Chestnut Hill Community Association voted unanimously Feb. 25 to appoint seven people to the Local’s new board of directors, a transitional move that was required after the CHCA became an official 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation.

Last October, after the CHCA became a non-stock, nonprofit Delaware corporation, it had to legally separate from the Local, now categorized as a nonprofit Pennsylvania corporation. Part of separating its operating divisions entailed the creation of a new board of directors for the Local. The CHCA was authorized to appoint five to nine members to the board, a majority of which could not be serving members on the CHCA board, although some overlap was allowed.

Brien Tilley, past president of the CHCA and chair of the nominating committee, presented a motion at the board meeting to approve the slate. The voted passed 18-0.

The board members are as follows:

  • Joel Barras, a new Chestnut Hill resident with a background in labor relations and law;

  • Paul Davies, former editor of the Sunday Inquirer and a teacher at the University of Delaware;

  • John Falco, an attorney;

  • Mark Keintz, a CHCA board member;

  • Dan Meyers, a former longtime reporter for the The Philadelphia Inquirer and a former radio host in Colorado who moved back to Chestnut Hill two years ago;

  • Richard Snowden, principal of Bowman Properties whose father was an editor of a newspaper, and

  • Bob Warner, a former writer for the Inquirer.

Tilley explained that board members who cannot be seated for more than two consecutive three-year terms will fall into three different classes.

Class I members will be up for reappointment after year one year, meaning they could serve for up to a total of seven years. Class II members can be reappointed after two years, allowing them to serve for up to eight years. Class III members can serve for up to six years since they will not be up for reappointment until after their first three years.

The classes are divided as follows:

  • Class I: Bob Warner and Dan Meyers,

  • Class II: Paul Davies and Joel Barras, and

  • Class III: Richard Snowden, Mark Keintz and John Falco.

These members will be officially seated on April 1, 2016.

Other appointees

The board of the CHCA unanimously voted to appoint the chair of the election and voting committee as well as its four judges. Laura Lucas, vice president of operations for the CHCA, presented her recommendations to the board. The motion was passed 18-0.

Michele Sage was appointed chair of the election and voting committee; the four judges are Jim Sage, Jean Wedgewood, Marissa Lewis and Brian Lewis.

The CHCA board also passed a motion to appoint the new awards committee member, whose term will expire in 2019. Brien Tilley was approved with an 18-0 vote.
