“There’s nothing quite as humbling or grounding as seeing each family stand in their newly built home with big smiles on their faces and tears of joy and gratitude in their eyes” – Brendan Dwyer, Guatemala trip alumnus.

It’s with that idea in mind that Teenagers Inc. embarks on their eighth season of going to Guatemala. This service learning expedition provides a wonderful opportunity for 9th to 12th graders to travel to another country and learn about a unique culture. While in Guatemala we will work together to build houses for families in need, work with malnourished babies and create memories and experiences that will last a lifetime.

Our trip coordinator, Grace Maher (another Guatemalan trip alumnus and lifelong resident of Mt. Airy) is looking for young people to join her Guatemalan Service Team from July 1 to 10.

The most important aspect of Teenagers Inc. is that our young volunteers learn from start to finish how to advocate and present their beliefs. Furthermore, each team member is expected to partake in the majority of the planning. From the moment they sign on, each teen is tasked with asking their networks to donate, come to events and create buzz through their various social media platforms about this fantastic opportunity. In addition, our teenagers and their families are tasked with planning and running fund-raisers. Lastly, trip-goers are encouraged to use their communities to collect supplies so that we can “fill our suitcases.” Last year we were able to bring over $10,000 in collected supplies to the families we worked with.

Joining the Guatemalan Service Team with Teenagers Inc. is easy and fun. Participants will become members of a global community with a shared goal of making the world a little bit brighter. Volunteers will build a home in a country that, in the end, will build a home in their heart.

To join this year’s trip you need to be between the 9th and12th grades, have a “can do” attitude, and have the desire to make a difference.
