Fridays on the Hill have been the talk of the town with our newest event, the Chestnut Hill Community Association’s Friday Night Movies Under the Stars. Our vision was to add a new event after our popular Free Pastorius Park Summer Concerts that would bring together neighbors during these glorious summer evenings when no one wants to come inside.
The work began last year to find funding and a prime location for this community-building event. Funding for three movie nights was provided by the Chestnut Hill Community Fund. The Water Tower Recreation Center graciously agreed to host the event and has been the perfect setting with its natural amphitheater.
This event also marked the debut of our Community Association Membership Appreciation Tent staffed with friendly volunteers handing out free popcorn, lemonade and temporary tattoos to members and ready to sign up new members. Our friends at the Chestnut Hill Business Association also donated three gift cards for our chance drawing.
Approximately 300 people have attended each movie shown so far, giving high marks to screenings of “Despicable Me” and “Ghostbusters.” The latter actually received a round of applause after the movie concluded, and some families stuck around for an impromptu late-night soccer game. (That’s the sign of a good time when no one wants to leave!)
The crowd starts milling in around 7 p.m. to place blankets and chairs on the hill and check out the latest food truck. On Friday, Aug. 21, the last movie – “Friday Night Lights” (PG-13) – will be shown. PBandU food truck will be on hand to tempt foodies of all ages.
A special thank you to the Movie Night Committee Chair Chris Padova, Membership Committee Chair Andy Kite, and the other volunteers for making Friday Nights on the Hill memorable this summer. The Movie Night Committee is comprised of Chris Padova, Laura Lucas, Arianna Neromiliotis, Maggie Lechleitner, Mike Chomentowski, Brien Tilley, Brian McLaughlin, and Bonnie Grant.
Membership Appreciation Tent volunteers have included Karl Martin, Madeleine Nist, Gerald Tracy, Rod Bartchy, Janet Lippincott, Bob Rossman, Noreen Spota and Janet Gala. And thank you to The Flying Deutschman and Prime Stache food trucks for making our picnic hour a huge success.
Please stop by our Membership Appreciation Tent to say hello or inquire about membership or volunteer opportunities.
