Friday Night Movies Under the Stars at the Water Tower Recreation Center

August is a month when many go on vacation. But for those of you left in Chestnut Hill, August is a good chance to take part in a summer film series.

This Friday, Aug. 7, The Chestnut Hill Community Association will kick off a month-long series called “Friday Night Movies Under the Stars.”

For three consecutive weeks, the CHCA will host an 8 p.m. movie screening at the Water Tower Recreation Center, Winston Road and Hartwell Lane, preceeded by a picnic hour starting at 7 p.m. During that hour, a well-known food truck will be on site and the CHCA will have special treats for kids.

CHCA members will get an additional treat in the form of a free bag of popcorn, a free drink and a chance to win a $50 Chestnut Hill gift card. Those perks will be available at a special membership tent each week.

This Friday, the inaugural movie will be “Despicable Me,” the PG-rated big screen debut of the beloved minions. The food truck that evening will be the Flying Deutschman. Flying is a mobile German restaurant that hand makes all of its food from scratch, offering German specialties such as Schnitzel and Bratwurst.

On Aug. 14, the ‘80s classic “Ghostbusters” will be shown. The Food Truck that night will be Prime Stache, a mobile version of the popular restaurant located in Old City, featuring American bistro style cuisine with all kinds of savory options, large gourmet sandwiches, burgers, wraps made with fresh ingredients and house-cured meats.

The series will conclude with “Friday Night Lights,” the film based on the book by former Inquirer writer Buzz Bissinger. The food truck that evening will be PBandU, a mobile restaurant that claims to “offer a true peanut butter experience,” from the classic peanut butter and jelly to a mouth-watering peanut butter, bacon and pickle sandwich.

The Water Tower Recreation Center is located at 200 East Hartwell Lane, in Chestnut Hill.

Rain dates and locations: “Despicable Me,” Friday, August 28 at Water Tower Recreation Center; “Ghostbusters,” Saturday, August 15 and “Friday Night Lights,” Saturday, August 22 at Springside Chestnut Hill Academy, 8000 Cherokee Street, Philadelphia, PA 19118.
