Work will begin this week on reconstruction of the Willow Grove Avenue Bridge over SEPTA's Chestnut Hill West line, adjacent to St. Martins Station. Advanced work for this project will begin on or about December 18, which will require limited lane closures during off-peak hours. On January 5, the existing bridge will be completely closed due to construction.
Detour signs will be posted to direct travelers around the worksite. Access to the adjacent SEPTA station and parking areas will be continuously maintained.
Westbound vehicular and pedestrian traffic will be redirected from Willow Grove Avenue to Lincoln Drive, to Springfield Avenue, to St. Martins Lane, and back to Willow Grove Avenue.
Eastbound vehicular and pedestrian traffic will be redirected from Willow Grove Avenue to St. Martins Lane, to Springfield Avenue, to Lincoln Drive, and back to Willow Grove Avenue. All truck traffic will continue to follow the current, in-place detour.
The current bridge, which was found to be structurally deficient, will be replaced with a three-span continuous structure, complete with natural stone veneer parapets and decorative protective barriers to match the surrounding area.
Construction is not due to be complete until Dec. 2015.
